Freekade, the iPad arcade cabinet, goes up for auction (video)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:17 am

What’s the date today, middle of August? Great, so we can now say with scientific certainty that it takes four and a half months to bring an excellent April Fools’ idea to market. That’s the total gap in time between the unveiling of the jokey iCade by the writers at ThinkGeek and the “for auction” sign going up on the Freekade arcade cabinet. This nostalgia-infused iPad accessory has now added a veneer of style to its retro control scheme, with “walnut effect” sides and a matte black finish. It interfaces with your slate via Bluetooth and (provided you’ve danced the jailbreaking jig) will play along with NES, SNES and PSX emulators obtainable from the Cydia store. You’ll find its latest demo video after the break and can track the auction’s progress at the source link below.

Pinel & Pinel’s 80’s arcade cabinet fits squarely into the future

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 am

Pinel & Pinel — it’s been awhile, hasn’t it? The design boutique has just kicked things back into high gear with an all-new creation inspired by the era of wooden TVs, Bono’s mullet and the original Engadget BBS. The 80’s Trunk, a swank new arcade cabinet, is easily one of the most astounding creations we’ve ever seen, and there’s no question that your basement is yearning for one as we speak. Unlike conventional cabinets, this one’s equipped with an emulation system that houses 60 unforgettable titles (Pac-Man, Space Invaders and 1924, just to name a few), and there’s also a plethora of color options to choose from. You’re also looking at a 1080p LCD, enough amplification to wake the neighbors with bleeps and bloops and an iPod / iPhone docking station if you prefer your own background noise. Mum’s the word on a price, but it’ll probably come down to choosing between this and your first born’s college education. You know what to do.

Belkin’s AV360 Mini DisplayPort Converter lets you play Xbox 360 on iMac, costs as much as an Arcade

Belkin's AV360 Mini DisplayPort Converter lets you play Xbox 360 on iMac, costs as much as an Arcade

If you’re inhabiting one of those quaint, downtown studio apartments in which your sink, oven, computer, and toilet are all within reach of your swiveling desk chair, and if that computer happens to be a 27-inch iMac, we have good news for you. Belkin has introduced its AV360 Mini DisplayPort Converter, which takes an HDMI input at up to 1080p and squeezes it into a Mini DisplayPort connector at 720p for display on your iMac. It’ll also push stereo audio through and is HDCP-compliant, so even protected content from your Blu-ray player will get by. The cost? $150, which is cheaper than getting a second display, but an awful lot for a converter box with a single input — especially when MonoPrice has similar offerings (which admittedly lack audio and HDCP) for under $10. But, if you don’t have room for anything else, this will fit in nicely with you and your minimalist/affluent lifestyle.

Xbox 360 Arcade reduced to $99** during Walmart Father’s Day sale

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:17 am
We already heard that the legacy Xbox 360 consoles would see a price cut with the introduction of the new Xbox 360 slimster. Now Walmart has sweetened the deal with a tempting Father’s Day bundle. Up through June 20th, purchasing a newly priced $149 Xbox 360 Arcade gets you a $50 Walmart eGift card (usable only on Walmart.com and Samsclub.com) on top of the two free games (Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and Viva Piñata), wireless controller, and 256MB of memory already included in Microsoft’s Spring Bundle. So really, a console that cost $199 just a few days ago is now selling for $99. Not bad.

** after using your $50 eGift card on crap you’d buy anyway, like Xbox 360 games and accessories.

Xbox 360 Arcade to eventually be replaced by $199 new Xbox 360; data transfer cable will be $20

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:18 pm

Liking the form factor, but not the price? You could settle for an existing Xbox 360 Elite, Pro or Arcade, as we hear the introduction of the new Xbox 360 is being accompanied by a $50 price cut on existing units, but if your heart’s set on that glossy black, there’s a cheaper Stealthbox coming down the pike eventually. GameSpot reports a slim Xbox 360 Arcade successor will appear after the now-discontinued SKUs sell out for the same $200 as before. Not exactly surprising, but it’s always nice to know.

And if you’ve preordered your shiny new Xbox 360 but have a older unit at home, you’re going to need a little something to move those profiles, avatars and game licenses over. Should you have an Elite (or if you’ve upgraded your hard drive) you might find the cable you need between your couch cushions, but on the off-chance your Xbox 360 Hard Drive Data Migration Transfer Kit hit the dumpster long ago, you’re not entirely out of luck. The one-way, single-use device will retail soon for $20, a mere $5 more than what it costs at the Microsoft Store — or $19 more than used cables fetch on eBay.

8-bit arcade guitar sounds (and looks) like a little piece of nerd heaven

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:18 pm
The hand built, 8-bit “arcade guitar” that you see above is the result of a DIY senior project, and it’s a pretty cool accomplishment. There’s not a ton of detail about how it was constructed, but we know that it’s got an FPGA (field-programmable gate array) for logic and function, strings and a joystick for adjusting the pitch, and it also boasts selectable waves and save banks. Most importantly, however, the final product sounds really, really good — and we’d advise you to check the video below.
