Deluxe Reverse Geocache is reusable, really awesome

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 4:19 pm
You’re familiar with geocaching, right? One person hides a “cache” somewhere in the world and hands out the coordinates; the first person to locate it via GPS wins. How about the “reverse geocache”? This one is a little more difficult to get together: you have to design a box of some sort that contains the necessary hardware to enable it to be opened only at a certain GPS coordinate. You hand the dude your box, and they traipse around the woods until they get to the right spot and the box opens. Well, the operator of the imakeprojects.com website has developed a little something called the “Deluxe Reverse Geocache,” a locked, electronically enhanced Pelican case that unlike other reverse geocaches, is designed to be reprogrammed and reused after completing its journey. But that’s not all! It also gives the user hints regarding the desired location, along with a limited number of attempts to solve the puzzle — after which the player is downgraded to one attempt per hour. Want to play? Hit the source link for all the details. Happy hunting!

RevoDrive PCIe SSD reviewed, deemed awesome, cheap, and awesome because it’s cheap

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:17 pm
Just the thought of an almost affordable PCIe SSD inspires some serious gadget lust, so we’re glad to see reviews of the OCZ RevoDrive starting to pop up ’round the net. The gang at PC Perpective got their hands on a model, and they’re clearly smitten, calling it “an absolute breath of fresh air.” Although it ain’t the fastest when compared to FusionIO’s offering, “it is less demanding on system resources and remains an outstanding performer for its price point” (in the $400-$600 range, depending on configuration). And it employs a simple RAID controller, so you can use it for your boot drive. The reviewer at AnandTech was a little less enthusiastic, pointing out that “application launch times and most conventional desktop uses won’t be affected” by the drive. But that’s not to say it isn’t a well-thought out piece of kit: “As far as the architecture of the drive goes,” it continues, “there doesn’t appear to be any downside to OCZ’s PCI-X to PCIe solution.” But that ain’t the half of it! Check out the source links to get the nitty-gritty details.

iPhone 4 launch day at AT&T stores: 7AM opening, awesome t-shirts confirmed

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:18 pm

What you’re looking at here, folks, is the extreme wardrobe you can expect to see when you waltz into a corporate-owned AT&T retail location on the iPhone 4’s launch day later this month — and even better, casual pants and footwear may be worn if approved! On a more serious note, though, this launch packet we’ve received confirms that stores will be opening on 7AM on the 24th and that new AT&T customers will be restricted to a maximum of one device (the same restriction applies to the new 8GB 3GS) and current customers will only be able to buy one phone per active line of service. Oh, and if you’re going to a store that sells U-verse service, expect a pitch. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Cubic’s COMBATREDI combat simulator takes augmented reality to new, awesome levels

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 4:18 pm
Cubic Corporation is a defense contractor that’s been kicking around in some form or another since the early days of the Cold War, although you’re more likely to know them as the operator of the New York City MetroCard system. What brings ‘em to our space, you ask? Another cutting edge wargadget, of course! Indeed, the company has just been contracted to supply 27 of its COMBATREDI training systems to the Florida Army National Guard (to the tune of $4.8 million). The combat simulator features a hi-def, helmet mounted OLED video display for a 60 x 45-degree field of view, an integrated 3D stereo headset for sound, and a wireless “surrogate” rifle that performs like a real one, right down to the need for fresh magazines and various firing modes. The user’s movements are tracked by way of a REDITAC tactical computer worn on the back, with a suite of sensors that can also determine where he’s looking, and whether he’s standing, kneeling, or lying on the ground. Of course, the company is selling this as the most realistic way to train our troops yet, although we can see it for what it really is: possibly the most bad-ass first-person shooter ever. PR after the break.

Updated Windows Phone 7 videos show Office doing awesome things

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:19 pm

As much as Microsoft has revealed about Windows Phone 7 thus far in the past two months, one critical, differentiating element that it’s going to be able to lord over its competitors — true Office support — has been a bit of a black box. We’re starting to see a little bit more about the Office team’s next-gen mobile product now, though, thanks to a pair of new videos that have been published this week. The first focuses on the email and calendar experience, but we do see one pretty awesome trick when the demo opens a PowerPoint file inline from the email client, edits it, and sends it back to the original sender. The second video dives deeper on the actual Office hub, where we get a quick look at the Word editor — and as you might expect, it’s squeaky-clean and nearly UI-free, just like pretty much everything else in the platform. Peep the videos after the break.

[Thanks, skipper]

Firefox ported to Pre, N900 says ‘psh, whatever, I’m still awesome’

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:17 am

WebKit’s all well and good, but every once in a while there’s a reason why you’ve got to pull out the Old Standby, right? Once reserved for the Maemo Elite, Firefox is slowly spreading from pocket to pocket, and webOS is mercifully the latest to get hooked up. We don’t know the full backstory here yet — it looks like you can’t download a user-friendly package right now — but this’ll undoubtedly be a good option when the Pre’s in-built browser simply won’t do. It’s not an official port we’re looking at, but let’s be honest: the community does a better job half the time, right?
