Terrafugia’s flying car Transitions into a safer, better, tamer-looking personal transporter

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:19 am

Whether you classify it as a roadable aircraft or a flying car, Terrafugia’s Transition looks resolutely set on avoiding vaporware status and becoming a bona fide commercial reality late next year. It’s ironic, then, that the latest development is being illustrated with a bunch of renders, but what they show is a significantly redesigned body, which now comes with FAA-approved safety features and brings the hybrid vehicle closer to its final shape. The new design integrates lessons learned from the Transition’s test flight last year to improve the wing shape and retraction mechanism, while also including an impact-absorbing crumple zone in the nose. The two-seater now also comes with a touchscreen center console — because nothing signals modernity better than a touchscreen — and can be seen in all its computer-generated glory on video after the break.

Entelligence: Five gadgets that could have and should have done better

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:18 pm

Entelligence is a column by technology strategist and author Michael Gartenberg, a man whose desire for a delicious cup of coffee and a quality New York bagel is dwarfed only by his passion for tech. In these articles, he’ll explore where our industry is and where it’s going — on both micro and macro levels — with the unique wit and insight only he can provide.

For every VHS, it seems there’s also a Betamax — a gadgets or standard that just didn’t live up to the expectations of the mass market at the time. Despite being loved by niche audiences, these folks just didn’t have what it took to make it to the big time. Here I celebrate some of my favorite gadgets and technologies that just couldn’t catch on with the populace at large.

AT&T execs get a better Captivate unboxing experience than you do

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:18 pm

We don’t know how often this happens, but it seems that AT&T brass are being provided with these ridiculously over-the-top packages for the Samsung Captivate that’s officially launching this weekend, including bundled accessories that us unwashed masses aren’t offered. As they say, membership has its privileges.

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

Mario live wallpaper for Android: better than a Tanooki Suit in the summer

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:19 pm

Seriously, words cannot describe how incredibly entertained we are by this Mario Live wallpaper for Android 2.1 and above devices. All across the home and locked screen, our favorite Italian faux-plumber protagonist runs through randomly-generated levels across various themes like outside, underground, and castle. It’s very customizable, allowing you to change the level’s difficulty, see the alternate paths Mario’s AI has plotted, and rendering the background (all at a cost to CPUs and battery life, of course). Free download — donations suggested, of course — and if you’re looking for a way to stare at your phone even longer, well, look no further. Videos through which you can live vicariously are after the break.

Liquavista displays go out in the sun, look better than all right (video)

Liquavista displays go out in the sun, look better than all right

We’ve seen Liquavista displays plenty of times at various trade shows, but so far they’ve always been locked up indoors. Now they’ve gone outside to enjoy the weather, and ARMdevices.net was there to capture the results. The low-power color and monochrome screens are shown looking at least as good in the wild as they do in captivity, and when placed next to a traditional LCD (in the laptop on the right) the difference is clear. Granted, the colors are a bit washed out, but the refresh rate is certainly far higher than anything we’ve seen from E Ink. While there’s still no firm word on how much this technology will cost manufacturers, converting from standard LCD production to Liquavista production is said to be relatively painless. How painless? We’ll rather disappointingly have to wait for at least another year before we find out, as these aren’t slated to go into production until the second half of 2011.

Google replaces hints of Chrome OS hardware from Acer, Dell, and HP with even better hints

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:17 am
As you may recall from a few days ago, Google offered some of the clearest evidence of Chrome OS hardware from major manufacturers yet by letting some build configurations for Acer, Dell, and HP slip out into its public code repository. Now, that wasn’t too surprising considering that each of the companies have already made their Chrome OS intentions pretty clear, but Google seems to have done a bit of backtracking nonetheless. It’s replaced the files with what you see above (the files, not the Caruso), which now suggest that Chrome OS hardware is coming from the likes of Amiga, Commodore and Atari. Way to raise expectations, Google.

Microsoft updating Live app suite, declares Windows ‘better than Mac for photos, hands down’

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:17 am

Looks like it’s blowhard season up in Redmond these days, as the latest word from Microsoft on its Live Essentials suite of apps has been accompanied by the brash pronouncement that it’s now markedly superior to Apple’s efforts in Mac OS X — at least when it comes to photos. This verdict was delivered by Brian Hall, General Manager for Windows Live, and is backed by a laundry list of new features we can expect by the holiday season of this year. Windows Live Photo Gallery and Movie Maker will soon be able to link up directly to sites like Flickr, Facebook and YouTube — which will allow for painless uploads as well as pulling in any additional tagging done on Facebook. New photo stitching and retouching abilities, along with face recognition (rather than mere detection) are also being touted, but the ultimate arbiter of the new software’s utility will obviously be the real hands-on experience for users. We shouldn’t have to wait too long for that, as a beta version of the freely downloadable (on Vista and 7, XP holdouts are no longer being served) suite should be making the rounds in the coming weeks.

NVIDIA CEO says Android is an OS to ‘unite behind,’ will be better tailored to tablets this Fall

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 4:17 pm

Microsoft’s Steve Guggenheimer may think that Android on tablets is still just an experiment, but it looks like NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang would beg to differ. Speaking at Computex, he said that “Windows is too big and it’s too full featured for smartbooks and tablets,” and that Android is instead finally an “operating system to unite behind.” He also admits, however, that Android isn’t quite ready for primetime in its current incarnation when it comes to tablets, but he says that Google knows this, and recognizes that Android “has to evolve, and be enhanced in certain capabilities, in order to be a good tablet operating system.” According to Huang, “we’ll have to wait until the Fall” for that to happen, but he seems confident that it will indeed happen, adding that the “operating systems are coming together” and “the devices are coming together.”

Sony’s new 11.7-inch OLED panel boasts better colors, longer lifespan

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:18 pm
Sony may have killed production of its groundbreaking XEL-1 OLED TV, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t necessarily working on a followup — it’s just unveiled a new and improved, and similarly sized OLED panel at SID 2010 last week. Apparently, the big advance with this display comes courtesy of the oxide semiconductor TFT (also known as IGZO) used for the OLED panel, which Sony was able to tweak enough to deliver a ten year lifespan — with average use, we presume. What’s more, while the panel still packs the same 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 960 x 540 resolution as the XEL-1, it does increase the brightness to 600 cd/m2 (up from 200 before), and Sony says it has a significantly improved color gamut as well. Of course, it is still just a prototype, and it’s not 3D, so any eventual products using it might not be Sony’s top priority at the moment.

Leaked Intel roadmap reveals six new notebook CPUs for 2010, better battery life in 2011

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:18 pm

We love the smell of silicon in the morning — especially when it emanates from one of Intel’s legendary leaked roadmaps. Today, we’ve stumbled across one with specs for Chipzilla’s entire fall collection of mobile chips, and a couple new details about that desiccated overpass the execs keep talking about. First up, it appears sources were spot-on about the Core i7s and Core i5s we heard about last week, but the 2.66GHz / 3.33 GHz Core i5-580M won’t be the only dual-core CPU to look for in Q4; it will be sandwiched between the 2.8GHz Core i7-640M (which turbos to 3.46GHz) and the 2.66GHz / 3.2GHz Core i5-560M — all of which peak at a conservative 35 watts.

True juice sippers will want a 15W CULV, however, and it seems more of those exist than Intel initially let on; Q4 will see a high-end Core i7-680UM that starts at 1.46GHz and turbos up to 2.53GHz and a 1.33GHz / 2.13GHz Core i5-560UM, plus a 25W 2.26GHz Core i7-660LM low-voltage chip will also join the fray. All these new dual-cores will have on-die Intel HD Graphics in one form or another, but all are also stopgaps until Intel’s 32nm “Huron River” platform debuts in the first quarter of 2011. Then, we’ll get WiMAX, WiDi and Intel Bluetooth alongside an intriguing new concept dubbed Zero Power ODD, which promises a power-saving sleep mode for our noisy optical disc drives (see more coverage link) and the promise of enough battery life to play two full Blu-rays on a single charge. Don’t believe us? See the slides below for more.
