We knew it was coming, and now it’s official: Rogers Wireless has today launched its entry-level “chatr” wireless brand for Canadians everywhere — and by “everywhere,” we mean Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Ottawa (Montreal is coming soon, as is possibly elsewhere). Two plans are available: $45 monthly for unlimited talk-and-text and $35 for unlimited talk and 50 free texts. As of now, the official website’s showing four devices to choose from, available at full price only (no subsidizing). On the low end, relatively speaking, there’s the Nokia 1661 candybar for $60, followed by the LG GB125R flip for $75, the Nokia 2680 portrait QWERTY slider for $95, and Samsung’s Gravity landscape QWERTY slider sitting at the top of the chain for $130. Rogers — whose name appears nowhere in Chatr’s branding so far — expects “hundreds” of chatr kiosks to be rolled out at Future Shops, Best Buys, Costcos, and other retail outlets.
The brand will compete with other budget-conscious options from the likes of Wind Mobile and Mobilicity, but this one’s got the advantage of Rogers’ more established, wider-reaching network. According to The Globe and Mail and CBC News, Wind will be offering a whopping $150 credit for those who switch to its network from Rogers / chatr. Mobilicity’s chairman John Bitove has a different strategy altogether, threatening to complain to the Competition Bureau that Rogers’ possible goal here is to drive other discount phone brands out of business before dissolving chatr and leaving the market with only a higher-priced segment. And if you were wondering where Telus and Bell Mobility stand, well, both companies are reportedly expected to follow suit with entry-level brands of their own. Data plan-averse Canadians should have quite the selection from which to choose.
It looks like Microsoft may have revealed something big at its annual MGX (Microsoft Global Exchange) event, namely… new logos for its main brands and a fresh brand motto. “Be What’s Next” touts a teaser which has been posted on YouTube, along with a fast moving sequence of morphing logos, shuffling from Windows, to Windows Phone, Xbox, Bing, and finally the familiar Office logo that’s been kicking around for a little longer. It’s unclear if these are just treatments used for a promo at the event, or if this is a signal that Redmond is dumping its familiar (and frankly dated) iconography for something a little looser, leaner, and hipper, but we can’t say it would be a bad thing. It would certainly make sense against a backdrop of potential comeback in the mobile space, gains in search, and the seemingly successful (or at least satisfying) Windows 7 launch. One thing is for sure, MGX is a corporate, non-public opportunity for the Microsoft faithful to cheer the brand (Ballmer received a 30 year commemoration at MGX 2010), so this would definitely be the place to unfurl some new branding. Check the video after the break to see the new style, and hit the gallery below for a bigger look.
Update: So… the YouTube video has been pulled. Fear not, we’ve got our own copy!
Update 2: We’ve just been contacted by Microsoft and told that these are not new logos which will be used on products, rather a standalone treatment to show the flexibility of joined brands. However, the “Be What’s Next” tagline is real, and will be showing up here and there.
It may not matter to you Yanks, but for many regions of Asia, this news may just ruin some weekends. Okay, so maybe “ruin” is a stretch, but if you suddenly stop seeing a new flow of Kohjinsha gear at your local computer market, here’s why: owner Inventec is killing the brand. As the story goes, Inventec has decided to stop producing mini-laptops and the like using the Kohjinsha sub-brand, instead turning that team into a full-on R&D operation. When it comes to end-user products, the Onkyo brand will be applied; we’ve seen some pretty radical Onkyo PCs over the past few months, so here’s hoping this also means that more and more would-be Kohjinsha products will end up in North America. Fingers crossed, right?
Well, it looks like Canadians will soon have yet another discount wireless brand to consider — Rogers has just officially announced plans to launch a new budget-minded “Chatr” brand to compete with the likes of Wind, Mobilicity and Public Mobile. Yes, that’s the same Rogers that already has the Fido discount brand, but it says that the “launch of a third brand mirrors many other industries like the hospitality and retail sectors and is designed to offer Canadians more choice.” The official announcement follows some rumors and leaks that have been circulating as of late, which suggested that Chatr would initially launch in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver on July 5th, although those details still haven’t yet been confirmed by Rogers.
That new prepaid business for the anti-power user crowd that Sprint was fixing to launch? Yeah, it’s here and it’s official: meet Common Cents Mobile. Billed as a way to help folks “cut unnecessary costs,” Common Cents Mobile is about as simple as it gets, offering pay-as-you-go 7-cent minutes and 7-cent text messages, plus unlimited messaging for $20 a month and data for $1 per megabyte per day. The bigger news, though, might be that voice minutes round down, which is a first in the US market as far as we know (in other words, frugal customers will want to make sure they hang up 59 seconds into the minute). As you might expect, the handset selection is bare-bones and easy on the pocketbook, consisting of the LG 101 at $19.77, the Samsung M340 at $39.77, and Kyocera’s portrait QWERTY S2300 coming in at $69.77 — all totally contract-free, of course. Look for these all to launch in select Walmarts across the land starting this Saturday, May 15. Follow the break for the full press release.
