Evatran’s Plugless Power gives your wheels a wireless proximity-based charge

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:17 pm

Trading gas nozzles for electric sockets may be the green thing to do — in more ways than one — but wouldn’t plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles be that much sweeter if you could just forget about the plug? That’s what Evatran is trying to do with its Plugless Power technology, shown off at Plug-In 2010 in San Jose, which charges your car automatically when you pull up to the company’s specially-designed curb. The “station block” above is a wireless induction charger (yes, a car-sized Powermat) that beams electricity to a shoebox-sized device you mount to the undercarriage of your vehicle, magnetically detecting and gravitating towards said shoebox even if you park somewhat crooked. The system presently works with 80 percent efficiency when firing electrons across a two-inch gap (engineers are shooting for 90 percent by the time it hits production) but of course the base station itself doesn’t get power from the ether — it requires one of the company’s own Level 2 wired chargers (and compatible wiring) to run. Should your residence or place of business be equipped, the 240 volt towers will set you back $3,245 this December, and the proximity charger will be available to early adopters in Q2 2011 (we’re hearing April) for the bargain price of $800.

JFE Engineering’s quick auto charger does 50% charge in three minutes, hits parking lots in March

JFE Engineering's quick auto charger does 50% charge in three minutes, hits parking lots in March

While range is an unfortunate limiting factor for electric vehicles, slow recharging time is perhaps even more troubling. Going 100 miles on a charge would be okay if you could stop at the corner electron stand and top up your cells while hitting the potty, and JFE Engineering’s quick charger gets makes that a reality, able to charge an EV’s batteries to 50 percent in just three minutes. Five minutes gets you a 70 percent charge, but from there things go downhill, with 30 minutes required for an 80 percent charge. The company is now pledging that these units will be ready for installation at convenience shops and the like by March — in Japan, of course. The “low cost” version is said to go for $60,000, while the standard model costs twice that. Fast-flowing electrons: expensive business.

Hori’s PS3 MMO Controller is large and in charge

Hori's PS3 MMO Controller is large and in charge

With a name like “PS3 MMO Controller” there’s probably not much more that you need to know about this monstrous creation from Hori. It isn’t exactly Final Fantasy themed, but seems to be targeted for those who will be chocobo breeding in XIV. Its main component is, of course, the big white keyboard, but there’s also that extension on the left side, replicating the left portion of a Dual Shock and looking like something found on a Battlestar Galactica set (the original, natch). On the right side of the keyboard lies the other analog stick and full complement of buttons. We’re thinking we’d rather tackle the denizens of hell for real than attempt God of War 3 with this thing, but for the massive crowd it should do quite well — whenever it actually ships. Hori didn’t have a price in mine just yet either.

Nyko charge base for PlayStation Move available for pre-order

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:17 pm

Yes, it looks like the PlayStation Move accessories are starting to trickle in. While we’re still lusting after the shooting attachment, we do realize the need for more modest hardware such as that supplied by Nyko. The Charge Station is a pretty straightforward affair: it features four ports for powering up as many Motion Controllers and / or Navigation Controllers, and can be pre-ordered from Amazon for $20. On a related note, we can’t wait to see what CTA comes up with for its Move accessories. We hope there are some Sony-compatible wings in our future!

Electric Daihatsu Mira goes 623 miles on a charge, but not to a showroom near you

Electric Daihatsu Mira goes 623 miles on a charge, but not to a showroom near you

Want an electric vehicle with more than a piddly couple-hundred mile range? Apparently you have to build it yourself and follow in the footsteps of the Japan Electric Vehicle Club, which broke the Guinness World Record last weekend by driving 623.76 miles (just over 1,000km) on a single charge in its customized Daihatsu Mira. The trip took 27.5 hours traveling around what appears to be the famous Tsukuba circuit in Shimotsuma, Japan. The car was powered by 8,320 Sanyo li-ion cells, each weighing about 44 grams, for a grand total of 807lbs — more than half the weight of a stock Mira. While we’re sure Daihatsu helped with this build, it’s worth noting that this is not an official project of the company, meaning the 100 mile Nissan Leaf is about as close as you’re going to get to this feat for the near future.

EA Sports to charge used game buyers $10 to unlock basic online multiplayer

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:17 am

Replace the phrase “I want my two dollars” with the slightly more complicated “I want you to pay me more money for a game you bought used, even though we received full price at retail originally,” and you’ll have a pretty good grasp on the situation here. For a while now game companies have been waging war against used game sales, most recently resorting to DLC unlock codes in games that can only be redeemed once, making the used purchase less attractive. However, EA Sports has escalated this practice right out of the stratosphere with its new “Online Pass” feature. Basically, the original purchaser is bestowed online functionality, added features, and bonus content, out of the kindness of EA’s heart (and a fun-to-enter redeem code), while a used buyer will get a 7 day trial of those things, and then have to pony up $10 if they want to keep at it. Yeah, you heard that correctly: you’ll have to pay $10 to play FutureMadden: Robots in the Red Zone online if you bought it used. The first title to get this special treatment will be Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, and after that? Well, we’re really hoping this doesn’t take off, but the most unfortunate aspect of this diabolical scheme is we really don’t see how this could possibly hurt EA’s bottom line. Sure, it’s evil, but that’s never stopped them before.

AT&T’s Q1 results: earnings down thanks to one-time charge, NYC seeing ’solid improvements’

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:17 pm

AT&T’s first quarter results posted this morning look generally quite positive for the company — it saw its highest first-quarter net wireless adds in history (1.9 million) and both postpaid and total churn are at their lowest levels ever, suggesting that subscribers are happier with their service than they have been in recent months, the thought of tantalizing hardware is keeping them around, they’re too worn down to bother switching, or some combination of the above. Net income of $2.4 billion was down a bit year over year — $600 million, to be exact — thanks to a one-time charge related to some tax craziness that only accountants would fully comprehend, but had it not been for that, they’d be looking at having banked $3.5 billion. In other words, the numbers are looking good.

At least the financial numbers are looking good, but what about those dropped calls? AT&T claims that Manhattan — one of the hardest-hit areas in the country, if not the hardest — saw a 6 percent improvement in the first quarter, with the New York metro area improving 9 percent overall. The promised third carrier rollout is claimed to be well underway, and as proof of all this noise, AT&T helpfully provides a pair of graphs — graphs with no perceptible Y-axis units, mind you — showing bigger bars and higher lines in the first quarter than in last. Of course, we still don’t appreciate AT&T bringing its extensive WiFi network into the equation here; it’s still totally non sequitur to the matter at hand, as far as we’re concerned, since even the most extensive WiFi coverage is a drop in the bucket against WWAN footprint. Besides, if these guys can actually meet their proclaimed goal of offering both the fastest and the most reliable 3G data around, it’s a moot point, right?
