Researchers propose ‘roaming’ charging stations to keep electric cars powered

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:17 pm
No, we’re not talking about robotic charging stations that roam the highways and recharge your car without even stopping (sadly), but a new system proposed Zafer Sahinoglu and his colleagues at the Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories in Cambridge, Massachusetts may just help to fill in some of the gaps on the road. While exact specifics are a bit light, the basic idea is to have a series of “roaming” chargers that would be charged up at night and moved around based on demand — demand that would be determined by sensors in electric vehicles, which would report their findings back to a central operations center. According to Sahinoglu, you’d only need five charging stations to cover 100 electric cars on a 100-kilometer stretch of highway, so it would seemingly be a quick and relatively inexpensive way to cover a large area — assuming you can find an efficient way to actually move the chargers around. Look for more details to be announced at the Vehicular Technology Conference in Ottawa next week.

Sony ponders charging for ‘online pass’ game functionality

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:17 am
We specifically told you guys not to tell your friends at Sony about a certain “feature” of EA Sports whereby the player is charged $10 to unlock online content and multiplayer functionality. And what do we have here? It looks like someone spilled the beans, because GamesIndustry.biz is reporting that Sony Computer Entertainment head Andrew House has been giving the matter some serious thought. “On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee,” he said, “we’re broadly supportive… and we’re exploring actively the same option for our own content.” Of course, this runs counter the free and democratic nature of PlayStation Network, but you know how strategies can change once someone gets dollar signs in their eyes.

Coulomb’s CT500 EV charging station now available for residential use

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:20 pm
Coulomb Technologies has already managed to get thousands of its electric vehicle charging stations installed across the US (and beyond), but it’s now looking to grab an even larger footprint — it’s just announced that its CT500 Level II ChargePoint Networked Charging Station is available for residential use. That will give you a 7.2 kw output and full compatibility Leviton’s Evr-Green EVSE “plug-and-play” pre-wiring kit for a supposedly easy installation — and, of course, an industry standard SAE J1772 connector to accommodate a whole range of electric vehicles. No word on pricing, but you can contact the Coulomb distributor nearest you (there’s nine in the US at the moment) for a quote and any additional information you might need. Full press release is after the break.

Leviton partners with Coulomb Technologies, makes EV charging stations plug-and-play

Home wiring may not be the hottest of topics, but get it wrong and, well, things can certainly get exciting. As electric vehicles become more commonplace, more and more people are going to start looking into what it will take to get more current running to their cars — nobody’s going to want to wait around for a 110V trickle charge. Leviton is a big name in home wiring and automation circles and has launched the Evr-Green sub-brand. One of its first products will be a pre-wiring kit for Level 2 charging stations, like GE’s WattStation. Level 2 chargers offer 240V and, with the Evr-Green pre-wiring kit, will be basically plug and play. The kits are said to cost around $200 — though naturally that won’t include the cost of installation for the kit itself.

Coulomb gets in an Empire State of mind, switches on NYC’s first public EV charging station

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:18 am

Coulomb gets in an empire state of mind, switches on NYC's first public EV charging stationBig Apple residents, get ready to rock the H to the O-V lane in your EV, because downtown recharging just got a little bit easier. Coulomb has dropped one of its ChargePoint stations in a parking lot near the Port Authority. It’s just the first of 100 hitting the city and 4,600 coming to other major metropolitan areas around the US by September of next year. And, unlike other NYC-based charging stations, you can use this one. Parking is even free for customers, amazingly, but you’ll need to sign up for an account to get access to that sweet 120 and 240V current. Even recharging won’t cost you a penny — but only for a month. After that the fees start. Sadly, even when saving the planet only the first one is free.
