NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M reviewed: fastest mobile GPU to date

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:19 pm

It’s one thing to have a product called the world’s fastest on paper, but it’s another thing entirely to have the benchmarks confirm it. NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 480M has been swooned over for months now, but it just recently hit the hardcore review sites in a big way. Frankly, there’s not a whole lot to say about the thing at this point: it’s simply the fastest mobile GPU to date, with Hot Hardware finding it to be “significantly faster in nearly all gaming benchmarks,” with just one title showing the Mobility Radeon HD 5870 as the champ by only a few frames. If you’ve been searching for the fastest mobile GPU in town, you’re wasting your time looking any harder; ‘course, all of that power consumes an insane level of energy, so true road warriors will certainly want to look elsewhere. Critics pointed out that energy consumption and excess heat were real issues, though both of those are easily overlooked when you’re able to take a beastly laptop to a LAN party rather than your desktop. Give those links below a visit if you still need proof.

Sigma SD15 nabs a lofty price and near-term release date, at long last

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:18 am

All together now: “Finally!” Believe it or not, we first saw the SD15 glimmer back in September of 2008 — practically an era ago based on what has transpired on our little planet since — and we found out this February that Sigma was keeping the dream alive for the time being. According to a report straight out of Japan, it looks as if the long wait for a DSLR that’s possibly past its prime by now is just about over. As the story goes, the SD15 (along with its famed Foveon X3 image sensor) will be shipping in at least some portions of the world by the month’s end, with a body-only price of ¥120,000 / €1,199 (around $1,310 on a good day) and a kit price of ¥140,000 ($1,528). ‘Course, we’re still planning to wait for the first legitimate consumer unboxing before we commence celebrating, but at least the end of the tunnel is clearly marked.

iPhone 4 confirms June 24 date with O2 UK

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:17 pm

Good news for non-America: O2 UK has become the first international carrier to confirm it’ll have the iPhone 4 ready for purchase and adoration on launch day, June 24. After the iPad gave preferential treatment to the US with its release schedule, some might have feared the similarly hot piece of tech Apple just announced today will also suffer from a tiered launch. It’s looking like Brits won’t have to worry about that particular pain, but it’s also curious that Vodafone and Orange — the other local carriers of the iPhone — are remaining mum tonight. Is Apple lending a hand to its old partner by allowing it early stock? That wouldn’t be entirely unfathomable, though it would be pretty unpleasant for impatient types who fancy some carrier choice.

Samsung develops USB-powered desktop PC monitor, plans 2011 street date

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:18 pm
We’ve seen more than our fair share of USB displays as of late, and on the whole they’re usually tiny — say, around 7-inches. Sure, they’re well-suited for someone who wants to get that Tweetdeck or their IRC window off of their main desktop, but that’s about it. It looks like Samsung’s poised to take the whole affair to the next level with its new 18.5-inch LCD display. By “improving the transmittance of the panel and the luminance efficiency of the backlight,” Tech-on! notes, the company was able to keep power consumption down to 6.3W — low enough that a forked USB 2.0 cable is sufficient to power the thing as well as supply data. The only drawback? Apparently the device uses an edge-lit backlight that limits the device’s lifetime to 30,000 hours compared to 50,000 for existing LCD monitors). According to the company, you can look forward to seeing these things hit store shelves sometime in 2011.

WeTab street date pushed back to mid-September

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:17 pm
WeTab, WePad — whatever name you use, it’s obvious that the gang at Neofonie doesn’t exactly run the tightest ship. (And yes, we’re still feeling a little stung from the product launch, where they tried to pass off Windows 7 as Linux.) If Amazon.de is to be believed, it looks like the €460 ($566) wonder won’t be available now until mid-September. This isn’t exactly the sort of thing that inspires confidence in pre-order customers, but who knows? Maybe some amusing behind-the-scenes drama is unfolding as we speak. You know how we love our schadenfreude.

Ralph de la Vega ‘just laughs’ when asked about AT&T iPhone exclusivity expiration date, says most customers will stay

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:17 pm

We still have no idea what’s going on with Apple, Verizon, and the iPhone, but it sounds like AT&T isn’t sweating it — speaking at a J.P. Morgan conference today, Ralph De La Vega reportedly “just laughed” when asked when Ma Bell’s iPhone exclusivity would run out, and indicated he wasn’t worried about other carriers potentially getting the phone. According to Ralph, some 80 percent of AT&T iPhone customers are on family or business plans, and they’re generally less likely to switch, so AT&T thinks it can hang onto them if Apple’s phone hits another carrier. That certainly sounds like AT&T’s been giving the issue some thought — another piece of kindling for our ever-smoldering Verizon iPhone Rumor Fire, or just tough talk to keep Apple in line? We might never know — but we do know that it’ll be much harder to keep those iPhone customers if AT&T’s service quality continues to suffer, and Ralph acknowledged the troubles, saying that AT&T’s biggest issue right now is simply getting enough equipment built in China and put into place. We’ll see what happens — we’re not going to believe that a Verizon iPhone is real until Steve asks if we can hear him now.

Update: AT&T just sent us a tiny snippet of de la Vega’s comments:

Having said that, all the improvements that we have seen are not just driven by the iPhone. The non-iPhone customer churn has seen the same reductions as the overall total postpaid customer churn improvement levels. So we’ve seen improvements in churn that are driven by the iPhone and by non-iPhone customers. And so we view that having a great portfolio of devices and services has been the key to our success and will continue to be. And I think the iPhone will be a part of our portfolio. And I think that customers are still going to come to us, like they’ve done in the past, looking for great choices, great devices and great services.

Interesting — it certainly doesn’t sound like he’s betting too heavily on keeping the iPhone exclusive, but we’d like some more context here. We’re looking for the full transcript (or better yet, video), so stay tuned.

Update 2: And here’s the entire exchange regarding exclusivity:

Q: I thought you might share with us the exclusivity end date, Ralph.
A: No, I don’t think I’m going to be able to do that, Mike.

Pithy!

Sony’s NEX3 / 5 cameras priced, June release date leaked?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:17 pm

It looks like Sony’s having a field day right now in Japan, making its official reveal of the NEX3 and NEX5 cameras, the “ultra-compact” DSLRs with interchangeable lenses we saw back at PMA. The presentation is going on as we speak, and the rumor sites seem to suggest Digital Photography School posted (and subsequently pulled) a review of the NEX3. Quesabesde, however, still has its preview of the not-quite-Micro Four Thirds shooters live, and is also listing some specs and prices. First with the technical details: the NEX3 has a 14.2 megapixel sensor, support for Memory Stick and SDXC media, 720p / 30fps video, and an articulating 2.95-inch LCD. The NEX5 boasts AVCHD 1080i video, and we’re not sure yet as to other differences between the pair. As for pricing, the bodies on their lonesome appear to be worth about €250 and €350, respectively — that’s $320 and $448 in US currency. Throw in a 16mm f2.8 lens for €250 and you’re now looking at a minimum of €500 (or $640) to join the fray. The kits are said to be going on sale in June. Sony’s official site hasn’t updated yet, but with any luck we’ll get the legit scoop in very short time.

Apple names April 30th, 5PM as date and time for 3G iPad retail launch

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:18 am

There was a bit of confusion with Apple’s online store update yesterday as to when the 3G version of its iPad will actually make its retail debut. Let that fog of ignorance be no more, as Cupertino has today named April 30th, a Friday, as the day the WiFi + 3G slate will arrive in stores. In American stores, that is, don’t get all excited if you live outside the 50 states. That’s also the date when early (read: before yesterday) pre-orders will be fulfilled. Deliveries for those were promised for “late April,” though clearly this date has more of the late and less of the April to it.
