HTC fires back at Apple antenna demo with percentage pew-pew

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:18 pm

Apple’s Friday press conference may have left a bad taste in some rival handset manufacturer’s mouths, but not all of them are taking Cupertino’s derision of their devices seriously — HTC’s Droid Eris was arguably the most effected by the grip of doom, its bars dropping to zilch when held, but the Taiwanese company keeping any controversial opinions to itself for now. Instead, it’s sharing a simple percentage to help clear the air. Whereas Apple claimed over 0.55 percent of customers called AppleCare with reception-related complaints, HTC’s Eric Lin told Pocket-lint the Droid Eris technical support rate was 0.016 percent, nearly thirty-four times lower — though even with a seven-month head start, we have to wonder if the Eris sold close to three million by the time Verizon brought the axe down.

Nokia completes its N8 video tour with media player and HDMI demo

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:18 am

You’ve seen parts uno and due already no doubt, so let’s dive straight into the third and final installment of Nokia’s N8 overview. Today we are treated to the Symbian^3 media player, which continues to closely resemble Apple’s Cover Flow, but we’re sure the companies will work it out between themselves. That cover-centric interface gets tugged around a few times to show the phone can handle it without lag, and we also get to see a repeat visit from our friend Mr. Long Press, which functions as a mobile version of a right-click by popping up a menu of contextual options. The video continues into a look at the HDMI connectivity and points out that the N8 will be compatible with Bluetooth keyboards — you know, if you’re in the mood for an Espoo-approved version of Google TV. See the whole thing after the break.

[Thanks, Hythem]

AMD Fusion APU gets its first public demo at Computex (video)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 4:18 am

Hey, what do you know — the Fusion lives! AMD’s CPU / GPU hybrid, which sounded so revolutionary back when it was first thought up, has finally shown off its Accelerated Processing grunt by chewing through a section of Aliens vs Predator live on stage at Computex. We can’t say we were exactly bowled over by the performance — the demo was just a leisurely walk through some leafy terrain, yet still seemed to dip below 30 frames a second at a few points, showing that the APU wasn’t all that comfortable handling the DirectX 11 tasks that were put upon it. This chip is targeted at ultraportables, however, and that’s a crowd with distinctly lower standards than your usual desktop gamer, so maybe there’s a future for this 2011-bound slice of silicon after all. We’ve got video of the full AMD presentation after the break — you’ll want to skip ahead 59 minutes to see the AVP runthrough.

NVIDIA 3D Vision Surround delayed, ATI gloats with an Eyefinity demo site

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:17 am

If you’re one of the truly lilliputian proportion of PC gamers who actually bought two of either the GTX 470 or GTX 480 from NVIDIA in the hope of running a tri-monitor 3D gorgefest, we’ve got bad news for ya. If you’re anyone else, enjoy the schadenfreude of knowing that those first guys will have to keep waiting for 3D Vision Surround support until the end of June. As NVIDIA tells it, the driver bringing the tri-dimensional, multi-monitor gaming nirvana was targeted for an April release, but has now slipped a couple of months. It’s disappointing to see one of the major selling points of the GTX 400 series coming so much later than the cards’ release, but at least ATI’s around to console you if you’re feeling jilted. The company has set up an Eyefinity Experience Tool that does a good job illustrating the benefits of gaming on a trifecta of monitors over a single display. Hit the source links for more.

Wii Controller Demo gets active, Android and Wiimote handle Donkey Kong on video

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 am

We knew the Wii Controller Demo app (now known as “Wii Controller IME”) was close to being able to interact with Android in a meaningful way, but we certainly didn’t expect to see Average Joes playing Donkey Kong on their Nexus One devices this soon. Not that we’re kvetching or anything — and in fact, we’d argue that this landed at a perfect time for you hard-workin’ Android owners to give this all a spin over the weekend. Jump on past the break for a look at the setup procedure as well as bona fide proof that a Wiimote and Android can indeed work together for the greater good. Mind those coconuts, though.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Wii Controller Demo brings your Wiimote and Android phone 2gether, 4ever

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 pm

Ryan Frawley still has a fair bit of work ahead of him, but his Wii Controller Demo app for Android sure holds an awful lot of promise. Available now for no charge (though a $1 paid version is available for those who dig his work), this here software allows Android users to create a Bluetooth link between their Wii remote and handset, and then log input information on the mobile’s display. As of now, there’s not a whole lot of value outside of Wiimote troubleshooting, but it’s a few lines of code away from being able to act as a controller for gaming. Just think — a Wiimote, your Android phone, an emulator, an HDMI output and four other nerds surrounding your television. Needless to say, we’ll be keeping a close eye out for updates coming to this one.

[Thanks, Jonathan]
