Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has been rooted, all is right with the world

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:19 pm

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has been rooted, all is right with the worldSony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 has been out and about for some time, facing off against the competition and predictably getting ripped to shreds. Now it has reached the next natural step of its evolution: receiving the root treatment by a bloke at xda-developers. User Bin4ry over there has posted step-by-step instructions on how to locate your device ID, re-flash your phone, and then enable superuser abilities. It all looks particularly straightforward, as far as these things go, and so if you’re looking for a bit more control this weekend don’t hesitate to click on through.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini / Mini Pro review

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 pm

In a smartphone market saturated with 3.5-inch and larger displays, Sony Ericsson reckons there’s still a little place for petite packages. Enter the Xperia X10 Mini (E10i) and Mini Pro (U20i) — both direct descendants of the beastly X10 Android 1.6 handset. Apart from the Pro’s slide-out keyboard, removable battery, and positioning of various features, the two Minis are otherwise internally identical — same processor, same camera, and same screen. So can these cute baby form factors offer more than just some palm-cuddling time? Can we get a decent smartphone performance out of them? Follow us after the break to find out.

Sony Ericsson ‘Shakira’ to be called the Xperia X8?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:17 am

We hesitate to call these legit press shots — as we’ve said before, Sony Ericsson fans are world-renowned for their capacity for high-quality fakery — but German site mobiFlip.de has posted a bunch of renders of the so-called Shakira that look very possibly real to us. They’re also saying that the phone will be dubbed the Xperia X8 at retail, a name that probably makes sense considering that the 3-inch Android phone is clearly designed to slot in below the high-end X10. Beyond that, we still don’t have much to go on — pricing, availability, target markets, and so on — so we’ll just hang out here on the edge of our seats for a while longer, or until we’re distracted once again by the X10 mini pro’s mind-numbing cuteness.

[Thanks, René]

Sony Ericsson prepping a 5-inch Android phone with QWERTY keyboard?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:17 am

Well, this is just great timing. What we’re looking at here is supposedly a Sony Ericsson smartphone, which seems to sport a five-inch screen and a hinged slide-out keyboard like the HTC Shift and the Eking S515. Even if this prototype turns out to be legit, our tipster — who has a solid track record — says it’s only running on Android 2.1 and that development is in its infancy while low-level drivers are being tested. Well, we can probably wait, except we’re also told that internally SE doesn’t appear to have any plans for 2.2 yet. Cue the angry tomatoes and eggs, but bring us a PSP phone any day and we’ll call off the rally.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is likely NTT DoCoMo’s best selling smartphone — ever

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:17 am

Japan’s wireless networks have a longstanding, legendary reputation for existing in some parallel plane that’s technologically light years ahead of the rest of the world, but that reputation’s unquestionably in greater danger today than in any point in the past fifteen years. Why? Though the featurephones offered by NTT DoCoMo, SoftBank, and KDDI are ultra high-spec beasts, they’re still featurephones at the end of the day — and this comes at a time when smartphones are finally becoming true cultural phenomena across the remainder of the developed world (and, in some cases, the developing world).

There’s no greater evidence of this than the word this week that Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 — a phone that’s been met with lukewarm reviews, including from Engadget Japanese’s own Ittousai — has allegedly become NTT DoCoMo’s best-selling smartphone in history, a fact that would seem completely inexplicable in any other market globally. What makes it possible in Japan, of course, is DoCoMo’s historically lame selection of true smartphones, a lineup that currently includes localized versions of the HTC Magic, and the original HTC Touch Diamond and BlackBerry Bold. What’s more, many of these devices integrate poorly with popular carrier services on account of their super-tight control of the operating systems running across the featurephone lineup, something they’ve got less control over with a device running Android or Windows Mobile.

In other words, when it’s reported that DoCoMo had sold 100,000 X10s in its first 20 days — and a third-party retailer claims that the Magic-esque HT-03A is the next best seller at 80,000 units in 10 months — it seems plausible, if not likely (and Ittousai agrees). Yeah, even though the localized device has been plagued with performance problems and bugs, incompatibilities with DoCoMo’s i-mode push email, and so on. It’s hard to say what it’s going to take for these guys to make an honest-to-goodness transition to the brave new world of open platforms and freewheeling third-party development, but they’re clearly not there yet.

Sony Ericsson posts surprise profit from unsurprising handsets

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:18 pm

Can it be, did Sony Ericsson just post its first quarterly profit since Q2 2008? Make.Believe it: the fantastically handsome crew from Stockholm is reporting a Q1 2010 net profit of €21 million, besting analysts who were expecting a €128 million loss. Importantly, SE managed to bump the average handset selling price to €134 on 10.5 million sold compared to the 14.5 million sold at an average of €120 a year prior thanks, in part, to the launch of its uneven X10 and buggy Vivaz. For those keeping track, that drops Sony Ericsson’s share of global handset sales down from 5% last quarter to around 4% currently. So yeah, slashing head count and closing facilities has earned Sony Ericsson a short-term win on Wall Street. Remains to be seen, however, if they’re now spread too thin to continue juggling Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Android with expectations for even more Sony Ericsson supported OSes in the future.

Sony Ericsson X10 can do multitouch after all, will get Android 2.1 in September?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:18 am

So, was all that hubbub for nothing? British retailer mobiles.co.uk — a wholly-owned subsidiary of giant Carphone Warehouse, for what it’s worth — is claiming a “man on the inside” as saying that the X10 actually can do multitouch after all, despite word from a Sony Ericsson product manager to the contrary. In fact, not only can it do multitouch, but it will do multitouch through a software update in the second half of the year, the source goes on to say. This all ties in nicely with the dude’s claim that the X10 will see an official update to Android 2.1 in September, a window that dovetails rather nicely with Sony Ericsson’s official line of 2H 2010. Of course, by the time September rolls around, we can only assume that Froyo will be alive and well, so the ultimate question of relevancy for Sony Ericsson’s very first Android venture remains to be answered.
