Samsung SCH-R900 approved by FCC: first US LTE phone is go

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:17 am

We first caught wind of the SCH-R900 after MetroPCS announced that it would be first to carry the Samsung handset when its fledgling LTE network lights up in select markets sometime after the summer. Now the FCC has been kind enough to bless a preproduction R900 with its approval. Not much is known about the dual-mode CDMA / LTE device other than what we can glean off the broad-shouldered image above and certifications for Bluetooth, 802.11b/g WiFi, dual-band 1700 / 1900 LTE and EvDO data. The future: it’s what’s for breakfast.

Apple Magic Trackpad first hands-on

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:18 am

So it’s real, and… it’s a trackpad. What seemed like it might have been pure rumor and some good Photoshopping just a short while ago has magically (ha ha!) transformed into reality. If you’re wondering what the Magic Trackpad is like to use — get ready for a shock. It feels just like using a slightly larger version of a MacBook or MacBook Pro pad. And we mean exactly, right down to the multitouch gestures and whole-pad click. Yes, it clicks. There’s also a new gesture, if you’re keeping track — a three-finger move that lets you drag windows around (very helpful), though you give up the functionality of being to navigate stuff like iPhoto galleries with a swipe. Not a huge loss, really. We’re going to be doing some serious testing with the new peripheral, but for now, feast your eyes on the pics below.

Apple posts record $3.25b profit in first full quarter of iPad sales, says more ‘amazing products’ coming this year

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:18 pm
http://www.engadget.com/media/2010/01/applestorebeijing2-01252010.jpg

Apple just posted up its third quarter earnings — its first full quarter selling the iPad — and, well, it’s raining cash in Cupertino. The company posted a record profit of $3.35b on record revenues of $15.7b, which is up from $1.83b and $9.73b from a year ago. The big stat? Apple sold 3.27 million iPads, nearly matching the 3.47 million Macs sold — and Mac sales were up 33 percent from a year ago to set a new quarterly record. Yeah, damn. iPhone sales — including the first few weeks of the iPhone 4 — were up 61 percent from a year ago to 8.4 million, and the iPod continued its slow decline, down eight percent to 9.41 million units sold. Over half of the Apple’s sales — 52 percent — were international, and Jobs is quoted saying “we have amazing new products still to come this year.” Not a bad way to head into back-to-school and the holidays, we suppose — we’ve got a feeling those iPad numbers are just going to go up. The conference call to discuss all this is at 5pm ET, we’ll be covering it live right here.

Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo completes first flight with crew on board

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:18 am
It still has a few more key hurdles to cross, but it looks like Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo (a.k.a. the VSS Enterprise) is remaining on track for its first commercial flight sometime next year. The latest milestone is the spacecraft’s first flight with a crew on board, which occurred on July 15th at Virgin Galactic’s usual base of operations, the Mojave Air and Space Port. As with previous flights, however, SpaceShipTwo remained attached to the VMS Eve “mothership” for the duration of the flight, but it did stay aloft for more than six hours as the crew (including test pilots Peter Siebold, Michael Alsbury) went through a range of tests. Still no word on exactly when SpaceShipTwo will see its first solo flight but, barring any change in plans, that should be the next flight that takes place.

First official Droid 2 pictures spotted in teaser site code?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:18 pm

Astute reader Dominic was just minding his business, hunting for hints in the Droid Does website source code, when what should he allegedly discover but an entire Droid 2 spread inside an Shockwave Flash file. To our knowledge these may be the first official images of the Motorola A955, though of course we’ve already seen it a number of times before. We just need Verizon to leak an official announcement with price and release date now — we’re hearing August 23rd — and perhaps a nice Hollywood trailer to round things out. See a larger version of Dominic’s discovery right after the break.

First real Symbian^4 screen shots emerge

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:18 am

We’d argue that the “wow” factor still isn’t there quite yet, but we’ll admit: Symbian^4 is clearly going to be a bit of a departure from the versions that came before it. The Symbian Foundation has posted the first handful of home screen UI shots on its developer wiki recently showing redesigned widgets, app categories and search, pop-up menus, and a standard-issue numeric touchscreen keypad — and unlike Nokia’s concept videos from before, these are from a real emulator running real code. While MeeGo is still expected to dominate the high end of its range, Nokia’s expecting to use Symbian^4 in at least some of its devices by early 2011 — and knowing how these guys like to go big with global roll-outs spanning tens or hundreds of millions of devices, this is a UI you might end up getting to know extremely well within a year or two.

Boxee’s first production Box gets shown off to the world (video)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:21 pm

Looks like the first production Boxee Box must have slipped through customs alongside those Popboxes that went out yesterday, shown off in this video by Chief Product Officer Zach Klein. Other than a new fingerprint-resistant outer casing there’s not a lot new to learn after our time with prototype hardware during CES, but check the video (embedded after the break) to see what the team is so excited about before it ships in November, and find out more about that box of Wheat Thins on the table. Mmm, Wheat Thins.

Coulomb gets in an Empire State of mind, switches on NYC’s first public EV charging station

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:18 am

Coulomb gets in an empire state of mind, switches on NYC's first public EV charging stationBig Apple residents, get ready to rock the H to the O-V lane in your EV, because downtown recharging just got a little bit easier. Coulomb has dropped one of its ChargePoint stations in a parking lot near the Port Authority. It’s just the first of 100 hitting the city and 4,600 coming to other major metropolitan areas around the US by September of next year. And, unlike other NYC-based charging stations, you can use this one. Parking is even free for customers, amazingly, but you’ll need to sign up for an account to get access to that sweet 120 and 240V current. Even recharging won’t cost you a penny — but only for a month. After that the fees start. Sadly, even when saving the planet only the first one is free.

Sharp intros first 100GB BDXL discs, Japan gets first dibs on July 30

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:17 am

It took a little while after the BDXL specification was finalized, but here’s Sharp busting down the door to expanded storage with the first official products adhering to said spec. The new VR-100BR1 discs will use triple-layer fairy dust to squish 100GB of data inside, and Akihabara News reports that they’ll be swiftly followed by quad-layer 128GB variants as well. Of course, every shiny new toy comes at a price, which in this case will be ¥5,000 per disc — that equates to $57 and makes us wonder why we wouldn’t just buy an external HDD with that cash. Perhaps because the slinky new Blu-ray media will be playable in that shiny new Sharp Blu-ray DVR you just bought? You did buy a Sharp DVR, right? Because the BD-HDW700/70 are the only models that will support these, at least for the moment.

Chile becomes first country to guarantee net neutrality, we start thinking about moving

Chile becomes first country to guarantee net neutrality, we start thinking about moving

Net neutrality: you want it, we want it, ISPs pretty much hate it. Chilean politicians? Those guys love the stuff! The Board of the Chamber of Deputies voted almost unanimously to to pass Bulletin 4915 which, among other things, forces an ISP to:

…ensure access to all types of content, services or applications available on the network and offer a service that does not distinguish content, applications or services, based on the source of it or their property.

There are other provisions as well forcing ISPs to protect user’s privacy and the integrity of their systems, but it’s the network neutrality bit we’re really digging here. However, the cynics among us are wondering how long until ISPs start claiming that bandwidth-hogging sites pose a risk to user’s systems. We’re sure they just don’t want your tubes to get backed up.
