Rover Puck WiMAX hotspot gets FCC’d, traction on ice subject of fierce debate

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:18 pm

The pool of choices for WiMAX hotspots continues to expand, and thanks to the FCC, we now know of another up-and-comer. The Rover Puck — trademarked by Clearwire and previously unheard of — joins the ranks Sprint’s Overdrive and its various rebrandings by providing pocketable 4G WiFi service. Unlike its predecessors, however, we finally have a new, more aerodynamic form factor. There isn’t much to the glean from the user manual at this point, and the oft-referenced Rover website still isn’t live — a WHOIS lookup reveals it was last updated via GoDaddy on July 2008 with no other details disclosed. So, until we get some word from the official news pipelines, a plethora of external / internal photos and user manual screenshots are only a mouseclick away.

Samsung’s 4-inch Windows Phone 7 handset gets named: Cetus (SGH-i917)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:17 am

You’d probably assume that Samsung would have a difficult time overshadowing the Galaxy S right now, but all it really takes is a salacious Bluetooth SIG entry that leaves only the most important parts to the imagination. We’ve known for some time now that Sammy would be one of Microsoft’s closest Windows Phone 7 launch partners, and we’ve even taken the time to toy with a prototype earlier in the year. But a new Bluetooth certification is now all-but-confirming a name: Cetus. The SGH-i917 is apt to be North America’s first WP7 device from Samsung, a 4-inch smartphone with an 800 x 480 AMOLED display, 5 megapixel camera, a VGA front-facing camera, an FM radio tuner, inbuilt GPS, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, USB 2.0 and of course, Bluetooth. As for pricing, availability and form factor? “Not yet.”

T-Mobile’s apparent myTouch 3G HD gets spied from the rear

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:17 pm

So, how do you feel about the look of this myTouch 3G HD we’ve been seeing this week? Haven’t formed a complete opinion yet? Well, maybe this new shot — seemingly of said phone’s backside — will help. As we’ve seen on past models, the rear features a tastefully-sized myTouch logo, lending a dose of credibility to the picture that seems to have been covertly snapped off a monitor where the render was being shown. In other words, we don’t have much reason to doubt this thing — and considering that the Vibrant isn’t a member of the myTouch line, T-Mobile’s overdue for a refreshed non-QWERTY Android device in that segment of the market. Should be an interesting few months for these guys, no?

iPhone 4 for Canada gets unlocked price: freedom is far from free

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:19 am

Sure, we in the US are pretty much stuck with AT&T when it comes to iPhone 4 indulgence, but Canada gets to pick — for a price. We knew the of the option up north but not how much, and according to CBC News, that’ll be $659 for 16GB, $779 for 32GB, and $549 for the 8GB iPhone 3GS. All Canadian dollars, of course — the US conversion would be about $637 / $753 / $530, respectively. Carriers are still offering it up for a discount on contract, and to be perfectly honest, we think that’s probably the route most people will take anyway. All the same, gotta love having a choice.

Microsoft to employees: ‘everybody gets a Windows Phone 7!’

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:18 pm

Microsoft guru extraordinaire Mary Jo Foley has retweeted a company employee boasting of an apparent commitment to hand out Windows Phone 7 devices to each and every one of Redmond’s 90,000-plus employees around the world. That’s certainly one way to spread the word — and realistically, the cost to Microsoft is a drop in the bucket if they can really take advantage of the word-of-mouth advertising effect here. Of course, step one in that process is going to be making sure the product is absolutely rock solid by the time those gratis units start getting handed out. Microsoft staffers do know how to multitask when they’re working, right?

BlackBerry Curve 9300 spotted in the wild again, gets examined in-depth

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:18 pm

We’ve already seen what’s purported to be the BlackBerry Curve 9300 out in the wild a few times, but Vietnemese site Mainguyen has now gotten its hands on a unit as well, and given us our most detailed look at the phone yet. That includes a better look at the slightly higher-end elements more reminiscent of the now-discontinued Curve 8900 than the Curve 8500 series it’s apparently replacing, and confirmation of at least a few specs (including a 3.2-megapixel camera). Head on past the break for a video, and hit up the source link below

Apple’s Magic Trackpad gets FCC approval?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 pm

We’re admittedly using our Jump To Conclusions Mat a little bit here, but we’re pretty sure Apple’s Magic Trackpad (or whatever they’ll end up calling it) just got FCC approval — and considering how tightly Apple usually manages its FCC dealings, this could mean it’ll be announced as early as this week. A device known only by its model number A1339 is the culprit here, described as a “Bluetooth Device” without any associated filings for WiFi or WWAN networks. The ultra-rough label location diagram is definitely the right shape for the accessory, and what’s interesting is that the test report was completed way back in October of 2009. Has Apple seriously been sitting on this thing for the better part of a year? Keep a close eye on the Apple Store for this one, folks.

Bloodhound SuperSonic Car gets a full-scale model ahead of land speed record attempt

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:18 am

If you’ve been busy wondering what a 1,000mph car might look like, here is your answer. A full-sized model of the Bloodhound SSC has been hammered together and is currently on show at the Farnborough International Air Show. We reckon the reason it’s there is because the real deal Bloodhound will be built by aeronatics companies and its supersonic speed will justify describing its movement as “flying.” Three of the men responsible for the project, including driver Andy Green, were involved in the current land speed record holder, the Thrust SSC, which acheved 763mph back in 1997. With better aerodynamics allied to a Falcon hybrid rocket and Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine, it’s believed that the Bloodhound will go all the way past the magical 1,000 marker, but there’s still at least a year before a shakedown run can be enacted. If everything goes well, however, they might be able to squeeze their attempt at the world land speed record in before the 2012 robocalypse. Fingers crossed.

Transformable Wall-E gets recreated with some love, Lego and DIY skills (video)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:18 am

Sure, you’ll have seen Lego-based Wall-E imitators before, but few recreate both the cuteness and the basic functionality of the drone quite like this one here. Programmed using Lego Mindstorms, this adorable little creation can transform itself into a box (like the real Wall-E!), pick up and carry objects, look up and down, and even produce and respond to sounds. It can be controlled remotely or left to do things by itself. Follow the break to see it on video.

Livescribe gets pensive, unleashes new Echo Smartpen

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:17 am

Okay, so smartpens aren’t as common as smartphones, but, hey, they’re getting smarter too! That’s right, Livescribe’s taken the cap off its new Echo smartpen, and not only is it thinner and lighter than the original Pulse pen, but it also packs more power. Like its predecessor, the Echo can capture audio and handwriting, but it’s now armed with more storage and features. The $169.95 4GB version promises up to 400 hours of audio recording, while the $199 8GB one up to 800 hours. However, the real updates come in the software arena — the Echo can now be password protected to safeguard those love letters, err notes / recordings, and has a new function for launching applications. Additionally, new desktop software lets users export pencasts — what the company has dubbed its visual note and audio recording — to share with others via social networks and e-mail.

But that’s not all, Livescribe’s promising more updates this fall, and they actually happen to be the most compelling of the bunch. By then you’ll be able to send notes via e-mail by just docking the pen to the computer and turn the pen and paper combo into a Wacom-like graphics tablet. Basically, you’ll be able to attach the pen to a computer via it’s micro-USB cable and just draw free hand on the screen. The latter option could be pretty awesome for designers and such, and all of those updates will be available in the coming months. Oh, you’re looking for some more Echo action now? We’ve got some brief impressions and a hands-on video after the break.
