Samsung 90 and 30 series LCDs work hard as computer monitors, play hard as 1080p HDTVs

The dividing line between computer monitor and HDTV grows ever thinner. Samsung is announcing two new series of multi-function monitors, displays that handle the computing you need with sizes ranging from 21.5- to 24-inches, 1920 x 1080 worth of pixels, and a response time of 5ms. But, they also handle the entertainment you want, with HDTV tuners, built-in speakers, and even remote controls. The $420, 24-inch 90 Series offers LED-backlighting and a retina-punishing 5,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, while the 21.5-, 23-, and 24-inch 30 Series makes do with a paltry 70,000:1 dynamic ratio at prices ranging from $270 to $330. All these genre-benders are shipping now, perfect for your dorm room escapades.

I-O Data’s HDPN-U500/V portable hard drive pulls video from your camcorder, plays it on your TV

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:17 am
Looking for a quick and easy way to bridge the gap between your camcorder and your TV? Then you might want to consider I-O Data’s new 500GB HDPN-U500/V portable hard drive, which packs a USB port to pull video directly off a compatible Sanyo Xacti, JVC Everio, or Sony Handycam camcorder, and an HDMI port to let you play that video on your TV straight from the hard drive. Of course, it’ll also function just fine as a regular external hard drive for your computer, and it boasts a shock-resistant design that should let you toss it around a bit without too much worry. No word on a release over here just yet, but folks in Japan should be able to pick this one up next month for ¥15,330, or about $180.

Xbox 360 S 250GB hard drive sneaks into stores, Microsoft cackles as you fall into its trap (update: official)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:17 am

Yeah, you thought you were so clever waiting for the 4GB Xbox 360 to come out. A mere $199, while all your sucker friends had already sprung the $299 for the hard drive-equipped model. You thought you could live a happy, fulfilling life swapping thumb drives and carefully cropping your download collection. But you can’t, can you? Night sweats, day sweats, you’ve got it bad. You need a hard drive, and now Microsoft’s got a $130 250 gigger just for your wreck of a self. The drive has started popping up in GameStop stores and on GameStop.com, and while Microsoft still hasn’t actually officially announced the accessory, when has that stopped you before?

Update: Yep, it’s official — Major Nelson just posted up a video saying the drives are headed out to retailers this weekend. Check it after the break.

Google sells out of Nexus Ones for devs, ‘working hard’ to get more; SLCD not alleviating backorders yet

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:17 pm

The Nexus One retail situation has been pretty dire since Google humanely put down its own online store, leaving only paid developers with an easy option to get an unlocked unit (and only an AWS 3G version at that). Now, even that’s been taken away — at least temporarily — thanks to unexpectedly strong demand that left Google to “blow through the (substantial) initial inventory in almost no time” and run up a backorder with HTC. Interestingly, Google specifically points out that HTC is doing a good job with manufacturing despite the AMOLED shortage, which leads us to wonder whether the SLCD version is shipping in quantity yet — and considering how the Nexus One and Desire are well into midlife, we wonder whether it makes sense to even bother at this point when we’ve got next-gen products just around the corner. Good news is that Google still seems committed to getting Nexus Ones back in stock for developers, we just don’t know when that’s going to happen.

Samsung S2 Portable hard disk does the 7,200RPM bump with USB 3.0

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 4:18 am
If you picked up Samsung’s 640GB S2 portable USB hard drive earlier this year then you might want to look away. Sammy just update the drive with a USB 3.0 interface and 7,200RPM spindle speed that should easily best its predecessor when it comes to pushing the bits around. Then again, maybe you bought the Michael Jackson edition in which case, a USB 2.0 interface and 5,400RPM speed are the least of your problems.
