Grace Digital’s Tuner Wireless Radio & Media Player adds internet radio to existing stereos

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:18 am

So, we’ve two main issues here. One, who in their right mind would pay $219.99 for a device that still requires a dedicated stereo in order to play back the internet radio streams that Grace Digital’s Tuner Wireless Radio & Media Player delivers? And secondly, who would want to put up with Grace Digital’s thoroughly lackluster UI? If you can’t grok the grumbling, the aforementioned company now has a slender new component it’d love to stick on your shelf, with the device shown above able to stream WiFi radio content from 30,000 stations, Pandora, iheartradio, Sirius, Live365, MP3tunes and a smattering of other sources. It can be wired up via Ethernet or used over 802.11g, with composite, Toslink and coaxial digital audio outputs around back. There’s a 4-line backlit LCD for displaying not nearly enough metadata at once, and there’s even a remote thrown in for those looking to build out their collection. It’s available now if you’re feeling the itch, though we’d suggest you get that checked out before blindly indulging.

Marantz adds Blu-ray 3D, internet streaming features across 2010 Blu-ray player, audio line

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:17 am

Marantz has unveiled its 2010 line of high end receivers, amplifiers, pre amplifiers and Blu-ray players, and naturally the headlining upgrades have to do with streaming internet video access, Blu-ray 3D and HDMI 1.4 compatibility. You can check out the press releases for all the details, but we’ll highlight the UD7005 ($899, due in September) and UD5005 ($499, August) “Universal Media Players,” which earn the tag by including everything SACD, DVD-Audio, DivX and even Blu-ray 3D playback, plus improving on their predecessors by featuring DLNA v1.5 streaming access and built in Netflix and YouTube compatibility. One disappointment however, while some are still waiting for an updated version of the flagship SR8002 receiver, with only new editions in the form of the SR5005, SR6005 and SR7005 receivers. The SR7005 features six HDMI 1.4a inputs, with Windows 7-compatible DLNA, iPod, IP control, Pandora and the other usual feature boxes checked when it ships next month for $1,599.

Prompt-It iPhone teleprompter perfect for business meetings, Internet cranks

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 pm
What did JFK, Obama, and Martin Luther King Jr. all have in common? If you believe the makers of You Prompt-It!, it’s the ability to use a teleprompter. And now you can join the pantheon of important Americans who inspire us regular schlubs to greatness. What does your $130 get you? Tripod, base, beamsplitter glass display, and a carrying case. Fits your iPhone or iPhone-esque device, and will sit comfortably on your laptop. To get that scrolling text effect, the manufacturer suggests that you check out the PROPROMPTER app from the App Store. What are you waiting for? We’re quite frankly getting sick of all the hemming and hawing on your YouTube rants. Maybe now you can start winning people over with your “Larry King is an alien from the future” message — it’s worth a shot at least. A video, of sorts, after the break

Ask Engadget: best media display / internet viewer for bedside?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:17 pm

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Jon, who just needs something to give him loads of glanceable information moments before he drifts off into the land of fairies, unicorns and deep-friend cotton candy. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“I’ve been trying to buy a new alarm clock lately and am completely appalled at the selection available online or elsewhere. Most are basically docks for your iPod / PMP and have a pre-turn of the century LCD digital clock display and some shoddy speakers. They also range in price from $40 to $200. After seeing things like the Sony Dash and the new Insignia Infocast, I could see those as viable alarm clock solutions (with weather, music, maybe an RSS feed). Are there other items out there that have a great display that you can dim and would be able to serve this purpose? Or or either of those the one to get?”

So, sweet-dreamers, what’ll it be? Do you have a Chumby-infused widget display on your own night stand? Go on, don’t be shy — help a brother out in comments below.

Insignia reveals 8-inch Infocast Internet Media Display, Sony Dash is like ‘brother?’

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:18 pm

Maybe we’re just seeing things, but darn if Insignia’s new Infocast Internet Media Display isn’t a dead ringer for the Sony Dash. Out of seemingly nowhere, Best Buy’s own in-house electronics brand has outed an 8-inch connected display meant to bring glanceable information as well as a slew of web-based widgets to your bedroom / office / den / underground cavern. Boasting inbuilt 802.11b/g WiFi, an integrated microphone, SRS audio and an 800 x 600 resolution touchpanel, the Infocast is equipped with 2GB of internal storage as well as a media card reader, and in case you couldn’t guess, the software is provided by none other than Chumby Industries. Users should have no issues displaying photos, video and music, and the $169.99 asking price is a full $30 less than the Dash’s MSRP. According to Best Buy’s website, this here gizmo is simply “coming soon,” but according to our man on the inside, it’ll be ready for purchase on June 20th. So, who’s down for squeezing a battery into this thing for some makeshift tablet action?

[Thanks, Anonymous]

Archos 5 Internet Tablet gets game-changing OpenGL support in 2.0.15 update (video)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:17 am

Speedy browser aside, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet started as the runt of the Android litter, but the ugly duckling is headed towards swanhood — while officially, it’s still stuck with Android 1.6, the tablet’s French manufacturer has just transformed the media machine into what looks like a stellar Android game system as well. Archos’ 2.0.15 update gives the Archos 5 support for OpenGL, letting it run games like Speed Forge 3D and Racing Thunder at a fantastic clip. Best of all, you won’t have to wait two shakes to test it out for yourself; there’s a 89MB download with your name on it at our source link. Video after the break.

[Thanks, Tom]

Telefonica gets behind MeeGo, says ’smartphones, netbooks, tablets, and internet connected TVs’ are possibilities

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:18 pm

Virtually all of the MeeGo buzz since Intel and Nokia’s tie-up back in February has been focused on high-end smartphones, tablets, and netbooks, but Telefonica reminds us that there’s another potential target for the platform, too — connected TVs. The Spanish wireless, fixed internet, and cable operator has thrown its weight behind MeeGo this week (which is a pretty big deal considering that the company has global reach across 25 countries and about a quarter billion subscribers), hinting that “services could potentially include content and applications that can be accessed from devices such as smartphones, netbooks, tablets, and internet connected TVs for Telefonica’s wireline and wireless operations.” We’ve yet to see any set-top box announcements in the MeeGo space, but with Google trying to light fires under the connected TV market, we imagine some competitors are bound to emerge — and it’s probably a good sign that they’ve got the backing of a cable company.

Sony Internet TV Box revealed by the FCC as Google TV device?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:18 am

Could the white box splayed atop the FCC workbench above known as the NSZ-GT1 be the first Google TV box from Sony? Sure seems to be: the 25 x 33-cm (9.8 x 13-inch) device is called the “Internet TV Box” in the FCC documents, similar wording to Sony’s already announced “Sony Internet TV” with integrated Google TV thingamaservice. The Foxconn-built settop box with 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi radios just cleared the FCC en route to an apparent US launch. The when is the big question — presumably on or around September 1st, the date that Sony’s short-term confidentiality request expires — that’s considered Fall right? A few notable document images after the break.

Clicker.tv brings streaming internet video to your TV’s browser; it has a web browser right?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:17 pm

When Clicker launched last fall it seemed like just another me-too streaming video aggregator, but we’ll have to give it another look after it’s followed up its Boxee integration by showing off the HTML5-built Clicker.tv site at Google I/O today. Designed as a “ten-foot” experience for TV screens it can be perused via mouse and keyboard or just a remote, bringing Clicker’s index of video including network TV, webisodes and web-only content, plus premium sources like Amazon VOD and iTunes. It’s currently in beta, but if leaning back and browsing from the couch is your thing — or on the off chance someone launches a Google TV with Intel processor, support for all those streaming codecs we love and a QWERTY remote from Logitech tomorrow — it could be worth bookmarking.
