Buying an iPhone 4 from a Canadian carrier? It’s locked

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:17 pm

We’ve been tipped this morning (and have now been able to confirm, thanks to our own Myriam Joire braving the lines) that if you buy an iPhone 4 in a Canadian carrier’s store today, you leave with it locked to that carrier — despite Apple’s trumpeting that you can buy it SIM-free. It appears as though the activation process might be responsible for causing the carrier lock — either that, or the carriers’ subsidized models are shipped locked, unlike the full-price devices you can buy directly from Apple. Either way, it’s a bummer, and it’s certainly something to take into consideration before you buy.

[Thanks, Chris]

Apple investigating issues with iOS 4 upgrade on iPhone 3G

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:17 am

Back when we outlined the iOS 4 features missing from iPhone 3G, we forgot one key bullet point: performance. As more and more two-year veterans of Apple’s phones have taken the plunge and upgraded to the latest firmware, slowdown and battery drain issues have become a common complaint, which is even more irksome when you think of just how little the update really adds to the UI. The Wall Street Journal reports speaking to an Apple spokesperson who said the company is looking into the matter. That doesn’t necessarily mean a fix is coming anytime soon, but hey, at least you can hold the darn thing however you want.

Motorola takes another shot at the iPhone 4, says Droid X is ‘no jacket required’

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:18 pm

Well this is getting good. Motorola was one of the first to take a subtle swipe at Apple’s iPhone 4 antenna dilemma with an ad saying you could hold the Droid X “any way you like,” Apple came right back with a video purportedly showing the Droid X suffering similar attenuation issues when held in the right hand, and now Moto’s responded with this cheeky ad that plays off Apple’s free iPhone case solution by saying the Droid X can make calls “without a bulky phone jacket.” Yeah, it’s pretty good — particularly because unlike most other phones, we haven’t been able to death grip the Droid X with any noticeable effect on 3G reception. (Although, truth be told, we can drop the WiFi signal by a few bars pretty easily.) Either way, we’re certainly enjoying this little slice of swagger from Moto — check a larger version after the break.

iPod touch becomes iPhone using Yosion’s Apple Peel 520?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:17 am

Oh sure, VoIP on the iPod touch is hardly breaking news these days, but what if you could actually slap on a regular SIM card and make calls on said device? That’s what Yosion’s appropriately named Apple Peel 520 claims to do. Powered by an Infineon baseband chip, this adapter not only offers voice calling and text messaging (presumably requiring a jailbroken iPod touch for the apps; GPRS not possible yet), but it also doubles up as an 800mAh battery and provides 4.5 hours of call time or 120 hours of standby juice. We’re told this cheeky hack’s coming out in China as early as this week for somewhere between ¥300 ($44) and ¥500 ($74), although the lack of an official website, full spec sheet or compatibility list means we’ll have to remain skeptical with this potentially vaporware company. Maybe the demo video after the break will keep us believing.

[Thanks, Bong]

iPhone 4 for Canada gets unlocked price: freedom is far from free

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:19 am

Sure, we in the US are pretty much stuck with AT&T when it comes to iPhone 4 indulgence, but Canada gets to pick — for a price. We knew the of the option up north but not how much, and according to CBC News, that’ll be $659 for 16GB, $779 for 32GB, and $549 for the 8GB iPhone 3GS. All Canadian dollars, of course — the US conversion would be about $637 / $753 / $530, respectively. Carriers are still offering it up for a discount on contract, and to be perfectly honest, we think that’s probably the route most people will take anyway. All the same, gotta love having a choice.

CP Design’s iPhone Game Pad prototype does Donkey Kong Country right (video)

CP Design's iPhone Game Pad prototype does Donkey Kong Country right (video)

With the iControlPad seemingly slipping further and further from reality, iPhone gamers with an affinity for buttons have fewer reasons to get out of bed in the morning and face the world. If that’s you then it’s time to wake up, Sunshine, because the iPhone Game Pad is here to bring a little light to your life. It’s a somewhat chubby slip-on case that, as of now, works only with the original model iPhone. (There’s a 3G/3GS model to come.) On the face it offers four primary control buttons plus a D-pad, what appears to be Select and Start buttons, plus a pair of shoulder buttons atop. This combination should make it perfect for emulation hounds or any ‘ol heathen who values tactility over design purity. As of now it’s just a prototype, but if you have the resources to bring this thing to production the folks at CP Design who crafted it would surely love to hear from you.
