Samsung Galaxy Tab rooted, just for bragging rights

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:18 pm

Okay, Sera-Apps, we’re happy you cracked the Milestone, but now you’re showing off — rooting the Samsung Galaxy Tab probably a full month before launch. Do you really want Samsung to have time to patch those holes? That’s what we thought. Now, go enjoy your Superuser status, and please save some exploits for the rest of us.

Xbox 360 slimster made over in white, just for the hell of it

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:18 am

Missing your oldie Xbox 360’s bright and airy white finish? Well, Microsoft’s still not willing to sell you a slimmified 360 in any color other than black (excepting the limited edition Halo gear), but at least you can gaze upon the singular example of what a white one may look like above. This seemingly repainted Xbox 360 250GB (to give it its official, and ridiculous, name) has been lovingly put together over in China and really makes us wonder why Microsoft is depriving us of such snowy good looks. Perhaps it wanted to draw a clear between the old and the new? Either way, hit the source for the cheapest way to peek an all-white slim 360 without giving the Colorware crew a call.

[Thanks, Anthony]

Griffin’s PartyDock does four-player iPhone/iPad gaming with just one device

Griffin's PartyDock does four-player iPhone/iPad gaming with just one device

Huddling around the iPhone, squinting at a tiny LCD is no way to spend your game nights. Even with an iPad the idea of multiplayer, single-device, cheek-to-cheek gaming doesn’t sound much more appealing… unless it’s one of those parties, perhaps. Anyhow, Griffin is apparently looking to make four-way iDevice gaming a little more palatable with the PartyDock, just spotted crossing the great FCC. It has a dock connector for your iPhone, iPod, or iPad and four simple wireless controllers for interacting with four-player games, pumped to your TV over composite and component. It basically creates a simple gaming console out of your portable device, an interesting idea, but what will make or break it will naturally be the software. Griffin has a few four-player games it will release for the thing, but short of a flood of titles hitting the App Store we have a hard time believing this will be a hit — whenever it ships, and for whatever it sells for.

Buffalo launches trio of affordable Wireless-N devices able to get just about anything online

Buffalo launches trio of affordable Wireless-N devices to get your game console, laptop, or just about anything online

Is your wireless adapter pumping out signals using a letter designation lower than N? If so, think of all that delicious speed you’re missing. Buffalo is here to give you a taste with three new Wireless-N devices, priced such that they’ll fit into most budgets. First up is a fairly standard router, the WCR-GN, sporting 802.11n WiFi and four Ethernet ports in a cool white design for a mere $40. Then there’s the WLAE-AG300N, a dual-port access point designed for making a pair of wired game consoles or the like wireless. That is a little more pricey, at $80, but the final product, the smallest of the bunch, brings us back down to $40. It’s the WLI-UC-GNM, a USB 2.0 802.11n adapter that is barely bigger than the port it fits in, poking out just far enough for you to pull the thing back out again. All three are pictured in the gallery below, and all three should be shipping soon.

Apple snags Liquidmetal IP, may just revive the eMac with an amorphous metal chassis

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 4:17 am

Ah, who are we kidding — we’re guessing a true, bona fide headless iMac would hit the market before the eMac ever makes a triumphant return, but it’s surely a novel thought, no? In a recent 8-K filing with the SEC, Apple made public that it had essentially acquired “substantially all of [Liquidmetal's] intellectual property assets,” not to mention a “perpetual, worldwide, fully-paid, exclusive license to commercialize such intellectual property in the field of consumer electronic products in exchange for a license fee.” In other words, Apple just bought up the rights to integrate Liquidmetal’s amorphous metal alloys into its product line, which would allow the company to create metallic wares without sweating the typical structural or strength limitations found in conventional metals. There’s no mention of dollars exchanged here, nor any details on what exactly Apple plans to do with its newfound IP (shown after the break), but we’re guessing the procurement team didn’t sign the dotted line for kicks and giggles.

ASUS Eee 30GB external hard drive fits the mold, may just be cuter than a button

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:17 am

It’s easy to give ASUS a hard time about the million billion different Eee PC flavors floating around out there, but darn if we are awestruck here. In a product introduction that’ll probably be tops for the week in terms of cuteness, the company’s diminutive Eee 30GB external hard drive has surfaced, and while we won’t deny lusting for more space, it’s hard to gripe about the value proposition. Turns out, this little bugger was actually making (gentle) waves a couple of months ago, but it’s just now found time to hit the mainstream and tease us all with a $31 price tag. Of course, $1 per gigabyte isn’t exactly a steal these days (when referring to HDDs, anyway), but it’s far more capacious than whatever USB drive you could snag for that same tally. There’s no mention of a US release, but frankly, this thing is screaming “stocking stuffer.” Make it happen, ASUS.

Luxurite’s custom 82-inch Glass TV is just the thing for your episode of Teen Cribs

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:17 am

Sure it’s the kind of distinction that only matters in some celeb’s rented-for-the-day mansion, but Luxurite is proudly claiming to be the first company offering anything as big as its 82-inch Glass TV (42-inch pictured). So named because its glass panel front flicks from see through (for more convenient TV watching) to a mirror when it’s turned off, listed specs show a 1080p resolution, 120,000:1 contrast ratio (yeah, right) and 3 HDMI inputs. Price? Don’t even ask. Well-heeled UK customers looking to spice up their bathroom, wet bar or other areas can get details on how to place a custom order beyond the read link.

Firefox Tab Candy groups your tabs, but that’s just for starters (video)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 4:20 am

Although Firefox already has a strong selection of tab management helpers like TooManyTabs, which gives you extra rows and memory-preserving options, or Tree Style Tab, which shifts things to a tree-based vertical menu, Mozilla has rolled up its scaly sleeves and decided to rethink the whole thing. Tab Candy starts off much like Safari’s TabExposé, by showing you all the tabs you currently have open in thumbnail form, but from there it allows you to organize them into separate groups (with sub-groups promised for the future), which then act in very much the same way as opening a new Firefox window. Yes, it’s folders within the browser, and it’s all based on good old fashioned HTML, CSS and JavaScript, so no pesky additional downloads will be required once this Alpha-stage code gets added to Firefox’s official release. If you want to give it an early spin, hit the source link below, but don’t neglect the video after the break to see what else Mozilla is thinking of cooking up with Tab Candy.

Autom, the robot weight loss coach: we’ll just keep the friends that lie to us, thanks

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 pm

Autom is a tiny robot, and he’s getting closer than ever to availability. His whole job? To coach you to lose weight… that’s right, Autom is a dieting robot. You start off by entering the details of your diet, fitness level, and exercise into Autom’s databank, and then he sits on your countertop and has daily ‘conversations’ with you — which we assume are full of a lot of reassuring aphorisms and ‘go get ‘em’ talk. Developed by Cory Kidd (who built the first iteration by hand) while studying at MIT, Autom is set to go into trials in the US sometime next year with a major insurance company. Now, we’re all for healthy living, and everyone knows we love robots, but we’re inclined to take a pass on Autom… if only because we can’t stand to hear the truth 100 percent of the time. If you hit up the source link, you can see a video of the little guy in action. A video of an earlier version of Autom is after the break.

iPhone 4 carrier unlock teased, not released just yet (update: video)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:18 pm

While we wait for a full, no-strings-attached jailbreak for the iPhone 4, let’s turn our attention to the other important matter of unlocking, shall we? iPhone Dev Team member planetbeing is teasing the world with a picture of an unlocked AT&T iPhone 4 being used way up north on Canada’s Bell — and while we don’t have a timeline for a release just yet, this should be particularly exciting news for Canadians who don’t have much interest in waiting any longer for their version of the phone to officially arrive. We’ll update you just as soon as it’s available.

[Thanks, Brad]

Update: Numerous readers have written in to remind us that the above image isn’t proof of an unlock, since an AT&T iPhone can roam on Bell. True — but considering how this is coming straight from an iPhone Dev Team member, we’re going to stay optimistic.

Update 2: Planetbeing has uploaded a video of the carrier unlock (embedded after the break), but he confesses that the existing build “sucks.” A cleaned up version should be ready for mass consumption shortly, though. [Thanks, all!]
