 APPLE iPad 2nd GENERATION LEAKED PROTOTYPES!!! 

Category: Appleadmin @ 12:18 pm

These are some images back when the iPad was a rumor. No one know what it would look like, (except for Apple) so some people PhotoShoped images of iPhones, and Macs, and put them together to make an “iSlate” (what everyone thought it would be called). IMPORTANT: WHEN I MADE THIS VIDEO, MOST PEOPLE THOUGHT THAT THE APPLE TABLET WOULD BE CALLED THE iSLATE, NOT THE iPAD. AND THIS VIDEO IS NOT ABOUT THE iPAD, IT’S ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE THOUGHT THE APPLE TABLET WOULD LOOK LIKE.

Motorola says leaked Droid X Android 2.2 build won’t be updated to the official release

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:17 pm

Can’t say this is a surprise, but Motorola posted a note on its support forums today warning users Droid X users against upgrading to that leaked Android 2.2 build or any of those custom ROMS that’re out there — they’ll be cut off from the official upgrade when it hits in early September and potentially “stuck on the leaked version.” Ouch. Of course, that’s the risk you take when you start flashing your phone with unofficial firmware, but between this, eFUSE, and those cease and desist letters, it certainly feels like Motorola is decidedly unhappy that anyone would have the gall to hack or tweak one of its handsets, even if the phone in question is the size of a small tank and marketed by aggressive murderous robot hands insisting that it “does” everything one can think of with no restrictions. Contrast that with HTC, which is not only at peace with the hacking community, but even takes the initiative to resolve similar problems.

Of course, no one would care about any of this if Motorola would just release stock Android builds for its devices as soon as they’re ready, but why learn that lesson when it’s possible to waste money developing Blur and adopting painfully annoying staggered OTA rollout schedules at the behest of carriers? That would just be silly.

[Thanks, Matthew]

Kinect beta Dashboard update gets leaked as soon as it arrives, hardware kits are ‘being packed’

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:17 am

Man, leakers don’t sleep! That hush-hush Kinect beta program is indeed in full effect, and while hardware is en route to giddy testers, the accompanying Xbox 360 Dashboard update has already been distributed — and promptly leaked. Joystiq has a gallery of screenshots from the new interface, including a revamped Avatar editor and some navigational alterations to account for using your body as the controller. We like this just for the humor value, including the note above instructing you to take a break if you get “sore” and the full-page list of prohibitions against talking about or showing the beta program’s interface. Ah well.

Leaked Intel roadmap details Sandy Bridge CPUs, expands SSD lineup?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:17 pm

If a set of supposedly leaked slides are legitimate (and they sure look convincing to us) than the shape of Intel’s dirt-brown 2011 plans has finally been revealed. As you can see immediately above, Chipzilla’s 25nm flash process is just about ready to double the size of the company’s award-winning consumer SSDs, bring up to 400GB of “enterprise-grade” multi-level cell memory to the enterprise space, and create a series of netbook-sized mini-SATA drives with the remains of the 34nm silicon.

On the processor front things are a little more iffy, but it seems safe to say that the naming scheme has changed, as the silicon wafers you’ll slot into a Q67 Express motherboard will have an extra digit (and often a letter) affixed to the end. Instead of a Core i7-870, you’ll see the likes of Core i7-2600, i7-2600S, i7-2600K and i5-2500T, with the K (as in the past) affording you an unlocked multiplier for overclocking and the S equaling reduced power consumption, or vastly reduced for the T models. German publication ComputerBase — which found and subsequently pulled the slides — somehow managed to dig up nearly full specs for desktop and laptop CPUs as well, and though we can’t verify their legitimacy, you’re welcome to marvel at the idea of a 3.5GHz processor running on just 35 watts by visiting the source link below.

[Thanks, Aristo]

Nikon D3100 SLR, Coolpix S1100pj and S5100 compacts leaked in German magazine

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:18 pm

We’ve definitely seen new Nikon gear leak in the foreign press before, and it looks like the cycle continues: that rumored Nikon D3100 SLR just made an appearance in the pages of Germany’s Foto Digital magazine, along with an updated Coolpx S1100pj projector-cam and a new Coolpix S5100. The D3100 is obviously the main attraction — it has a 14 megapixel sensor with up to ISO 12800 sensitivity, a new 1080p video mode, and an improved processor and autofocus system, for a body-only price of €650 ($831). Not bad — although we don’t know if it has that rumored continuous autofocus mode for video yet. We don’t know nearly as much about the new Coolpix S1100pj, except that it’ll retain the projector from the S1000pj, come in colors and add a touchscreen and remote control the mix; the Coolpix S5100 is less of a mystery, with a 12 megapixel sensor and a 28-140mm zoom lens pegged in the magazine. Of course, none of this is officially official yet, but we’d imagine we’ll be hearing more real soon — stay tuned.

Dell Streak gets leaked Android 2.1 update in the UK, but still the same ol’ 1.6 in the US

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:17 am

What is there to do on a cloudy Friday in Britain? Why, scouring the web for your phone’s firmware update, of course. That’s probably how a Modaco member unearthed the Dell Streak’s latest Android 2.1 build (apparently just for locked O2 devices), anyway. Sure, the link’s quirky domain name and sluggish speed may arouse some suspicion, but our sources have confirmed that this non-final update is indeed coming from Dell (and you can expect the link to be killed soon). Many users — including ourselves — are reporting a successful update and enjoying the same goodies we spotted in our preview: 720p camcorder, a much improved keyboard, live wallpapers, etc. Fancy giving it a shot? Here’s how: copy the .pkg file to the SD card, rename it to “Update.pkg,” then boot the Streak into recovery mode (hold down both volume keys and then power on), and finally choose to recover from said file (your phone will be wiped!). Of course, as with any firmware updates, make sure you have some sort of backup somewhere and tread carefully.

In other news: as promised, Dell’s AT&T Streak ordering page went live today, and yes, it’ll still be shipped with Android 1.6. Looks like xda-developers and Modaco are well on course to beat Dell on releasing a 2.1 or even a 2.2 update.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Exclusive: Motorola WX445 leaked, offers low-end Android for Verizon

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:18 pm

So this little number just rolled into our tips inbox — and at a glance, it appears to be the anti-Droid X, if that makes any sense. We’re being told this is the Motorola WX445 for Verizon (street name unknown), featuring Android 2.1, a flash-less camera of unknown pixel count, a touchscreen ranging somewhere between 2.5 and 3 inches, and a pretty light 1170mAh battery on board. Our tipster tells us it runs Blur, though we imagine it’s possible it runs the Blur-esque skin seen on the Droid X that doesn’t actually make use of Moto’s back end to do its deed. We’re also told it’s “not a very impressive phone” and resembles a keyboardless Pre Plus in the flesh “but cheaper looking,” so needless to say, you’re not going to be cross-shopping this against an EVO 4G; if anything, we suppose it might make a decent Devour alternative. More on this one as we get it.

[Thanks, Besiktas Fan]

What is this tiny Apple touchscreen that just leaked in Taiwan?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 pm

Okay, we have no idea what’s going on here, but Taiwanese site Apple.pro has just posted up some shots of appears to be a tiny Apple-labeled touchscreen panel — it measures just 3cm (1.18 inches) square. Given the site’s track record with previous Apple component leaks like the white iPhone 4 and the unibody MacBook Pro enclosure, we’re somewhat inclined to believe this is real, but we have no idea what it’s for — a new iPod nano? The next-gen Apple TV’s remote control? Steve Jobs’s dream watch? — but we’re definitely interested in finding out. One more pic showing the Apple label on the ribbon cable after the break.

Leaked Telstra roadmap points to October Windows Phone 7 launch, HTC Mozart device

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 4:17 am

Microsoft still hasn’t gotten any more specific than “holiday 2010″ for a Windows Phone 7 launch date, but it looks like we may now have a bit more specificity courtesy of Australian carrier Telstra. According to a leaked snippet from a purportedly authentic Telstra roadmap, the hereto unheard of Windows Phone 7-based HTC Mozart will be launching sometime in October — presumably coinciding with the launch of Windows Phone 7 itself. As you may be able to tell, however, the phone pictured is actually a mockup of an HTC Desire, but none other than Conflipper says that the Mozart is indeed a real device and, incidentally, headed to T-Mobile US as well.
