Tweaker ports Samsung’s TouchWIz UI onto non-rooted Nexus One for reasons unknown

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:18 am

This one’s been kicking around the interwebs for a few weeks now, but it has managed to grow into something of a beast during that period. Frankly, we couldn’t think of less fitting way to send the glorious Nexus One out than to completely deface it and ruin what Google has worked so hard to perfect. But regardless of what we think, that’s exactly what has happened here. One rolle3k over at xda developers clearly has a masochistic gene or two planted inside of his skull, but at least his APK doesn’t require your N1 to be rooted before providing you access to a TouchWiz user interface. Feel free to hit the source if you’re up for seeing what you’ve been missing out on, but only if you literally cannot think of a single better thing to do with your time.

OtterBox ’shops camera hole onto iPad case, presumably for fun and profit

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:18 pm

Well played, OtterBox — you’ve got your inbound link. Here are some other attention-grabbing ideas we might recommend:

  • A “Verizon-compatible” iPhone case
  • “iPod nano touch” screen protectors
  • A housing for “Apple TV (late 2010)” boxes
  • An iPhone 4 bumper that costs less than thirty frickin’ dollars

[Thanks, Galen]

Modder installs Windows 7 onto JooJoo tablet, gets touch working (video)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:17 am

Yeah, we had a few issues with the Linux build installed on Fusion Garage’s JooJoo tablet, but were things really so bad that we needed to shoehorn Windows 7 onto the thing? Nah, but who wouldn’t enjoy that challenge? One darkdavy has somehow been able to install a fresh copy of Win7 onto his JooJoo, and while he notes that it’s currently running a wee bit warm, the touch panel is working and the battery is lasting around four hours on a full charge. Utilizing the stock hardware (a 4GB SSD and 1GB of RAM), he’s experiencing “flawless” 720p movie playback, and various other members are mentioning successful installs of both Windows Embedded Compact 7 (via MSDN) and Windows 7 Home. The only major hang-ups are the lack of accelerometer support and the inability to use 3G, but we’re pretty confident that both of those issues will be sorted in short order. Don’t believe us? Head on past the break and mash play, and then hit the source link to get in on the fun yourself.

[Thanks, Mark]

Android 2.2 wastes no time getting hacked onto HTC Dream and Magic

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:18 am

Though we’re not even a wee bit shocked to see a “usable” version of Froyo already available to owners of the G1 / Dream and Magic, we’re definitely heartened to see that phones running 2008 specs can handily run a mid-2010 version of the platform. There’s plenty of stuff that doesn’t work yet — WiFi and GPS, just to name a couple of biggies — but we suspect that this is one dev community that won’t give up until everything is working to their satisfaction. Motivation to hang on to otherwise outdated hardware for a few more months, perhaps?

Microsoft throws a helping of vivacious onto Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 line

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:18 am

What good is a BlueTrack mouse in only pink and gray? Not nearly as good as one splashed in every pastel you can think of, and especially not as good as a new trio of varied ones. Microsoft’s Wireless Mobile Mose 3500 family — announced earlier this year as some of the most portable BlueTrack mice this planet has ever seen — just gained three new vivid members, and each of ‘em are on sale now at Best Buy for a penny under $30. If we had to guess, we’d say these are perfect for the KIN demographic. Hey, stereotypes don’t just form from thin air, you know…

Latitude E4310 sneaks onto Dell’s e-tail pages, ‘coming soon’

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:19 am

In its own inimitable style, Dell has just updated its Latitude range with the E4310 model we saw floating through the FCC bearing the fancy codename of Lafite. As part of the company’s “E-Family,” this 13-incher promises rock solid durability and rugged design without compromising on the spec sheet goodies. Processor options are provided by Intel’s 2.4GHz Core i5-520M or 2.53GHz Core i5-540M, while memory can stretch up to 8GB of DDR3 and storage space can be maxed out at 500GB. Alternatively, you can plump for the 256GB SSD, with a backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader and UWB radio filling out the optional extras. Prices aren’t yet available, but we can surely expect them very soon. In other unannounced news, the E6410 and E6510 models recently spotted on Dell’s UK site are now available via the US branch as well, with prices starting at just over $1,100 for base systems equipped with Core i5-520M CPUs. Hit the links below to learn more.

[Thanks, Jason]

WOWee One portable speaker latches onto surfaces, iPad’s coattails

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:17 am

Portable devices that turn any surface into a speaker are hardly anything new, but the folks behind the WOWee One portable speaker (not WowWee) seem to be making some slightly bigger claims than most, and are even throwing out the increasingly popular “perfect companion for the iPad” phrase for good measure. As with other similar devices, the WOWee One conducts sound through any surface you rest it on (even a wall with an optional attachment), but it also has the benefit of patented “Gel Audio” technology, which promises to produce bass frequencies about three octaves below any other comparable device. You’ll also apparently get about 20 hours of use from the built-in rechargeable battery, and your choice of three different colors — all for the not so low price of $79.99. Head on past the break for a quick video.

Fujifilm’s Finepix HD Player HDP-L1 puts 3D W1 footage onto your new 3D HDTV

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:18 am

Still monkeying around with that Finepix Real 3D W1 camera, somewhat confused about what exactly you bought it for? Take heart, bandwagon jumper — the bridge you’ve been searching for has just been constructed. Fujifilm has recently introduced a new card reader / HD player for use with its year-old 3D point-and-shoot, and judging by the topic of conversation at this year’s CES, it sure seems like the timing is far better this go ’round. Put simply, the HDP-L1 (¥4,000; $43) accepts both 2D and 3D content stored on SD / SDHC cards from your W1, and the HDMI output pipes that content directly onto your shiny new 3D HDTV for at-home enjoyment. We’re told that it’ll also work with that antediluvian 2D content as well, but let’s be honest — you didn’t buy a 3D camera just to shoot in 2D, now did you? On second thought, don’t answer that.

Seagate teams with Paramount, pre-loads movies onto 500GB FreeAgent Go

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 am

Another fine day in paradise, another fine external hard drive for archivists to consider. Seagate has just announced its latest FreeAgent Go USB 2.0 drive, a pocket-sized external HDD with a 2.5-inch 500GB disc in there ready to be stuffed with your favorite blurred images and shakycam videos from the decade that was… except for the 20GB or so that’s already claimed. In a move that may or may not be indicative of forward progress in the fight to free digital content, Seagate has partnered with Paramount Pictures in order to pre-load these drives with Star Trek (yes, the 2009 version), which can be unlocked gratis and shuffled about as you please after you register the drive. Additionally, 20 other titles are pre-loaded, and those guys can be “easily and securely unlocked through the online purchase of a license key,” with pricing ranging from $9.99 to $14.99 per film. We had an opportunity to fire up Star Trek, and we must say — the whole unlocking process was pretty painless on a Windows 7 rig. We didn’t splurge on a third ninth copy of Nacho Libre, but we’re pretty sure that masterpiece would be similarly easy to tap into. Oh, and if you’d rather just have free space rather than movies you already own / couldn’t care less about, the delete command works wonders.
