HTC will ship all Android phones in China with Froyo on board, fuels fire for immediate update closer to home

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:18 am

A wordy headline, to be sure, but a pleasing one nonetheless. We came across HTC’s Chinese web portal listing the Desire as coming with Android 2.2 (with Sense!) and simply had to ping the official source for confirmation. It turns out the info up there is no mistake: all HTC Android handsets shipping to China — which includes the Wildfire and Tianyi — will do so with Froyo preloaded, cutting down on your upgrade angst at least until the Gingerbread man comes a’knocking. HTC has also reiterated that a 2.2 update for its phones already on the market will be delivered “very soon,” so if all goes all, we should be looking at a Froyo-dominated August in the land of High Tech Computers.

[Thanks, Christian]

HTC starts selling phones in China under its own name

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:19 am

It’s long been the case that if you wanted a HTC handset over in the world’s most populous nation, you’d have had to look for its rebadged variant under the Dopod brand. But, as of today, that is no more. The prolific Taiwanese phone maker has decided that its name is now recognizable and valuable enough in China to be put on its own hardware and is kicking off a campaign with four own-branded phones. The Wildfire and Desire we’re all familiar with already, while the Tianxi looks like a mildly tweaked HD2 and the Tianyi is a mix-and-match of design elements from the rest of HTC’s portfolio. The company’s also announcing a partnership with China Mobile to bring these puppies to market, so it’s looking like smooth sailing ahead. Full PR after the break.

OpenGL 4.1 spec finalized, streamlines 3D graphics for web and phones

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:20 pm

Only four months after OpenGL 4.0 hit the scene, the next revision of the cross-platform graphics API is here, bearing gifts of fancier math and more cribbed DirectX 11 features. Unless you’re a graphics guru, though, we doubt you’ll be that interested in “64-bit floating-point component vertex shader inputs,” so let’s get to the meat of what you’re after: impressive 3D gaming. OpenGL 4.1 promises to help deliver that to cellphones easier than ever before, by making OpenGL ES (used in iOS and Android, depending on your hardware) completely compatible with the desktop graphics version, and promises “features to improve robustness” in WebGL 3D browser acceleration as well. There’s also support for stencil values in fragment shaders, but we digress — if you understood what we just said, hit up the source and more coverage links for the rest.

Twidroid acquired by TweetUp, soon to be bundled with new Android phones as Twidroyd

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:18 am

Remember our old friend Twidroid? You know, the app that came out as cream of the crop in our little Android Twitter client round-up? Things are about to get interesting again — following today’s acquisition of said app, SEO firm TweetUp has renamed its latest trophy to Twidroyd to avoid upsetting a certain Mr. Lucas. The bigger news, though, is that we’re told this action-packed app will be preloaded “on millions of upcoming Android phones from five of the leading handset manufacturers.” That’s a pretty bold statement to make, especially considering it wasn’t long ago when Twitter Inc. pushed out its own Android client, but we’ll happily accept this freebie anyway.

Samsung’s American Galaxy S phones pose for family portrait

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:20 am

Samsung’s US team held a swanky event in NYC this evening to launch all four of its new US-spec Galaxy S phones in style. If you haven’t been brought up to speed on Samsung’s stateside Android invasion, the Captivate is headed to AT&T, the Fascinate to Verizon, the Epic 4G to Sprint and the Vibrant to T-Mobile. Each of the phones have 4-inch Super AMOLED screens, 1GHz Hummingbird Cortex A8 CPUs, and cams that can capture 720p video. We’ve already got detailed hands on impressions of the Captivate and Epic 4G, but stay tuned for Fascinate and Vibrant previews tonight. In the meantime, check out the family all together in the pictures in the gallery below.

Samsung says all Galaxy S phones will get Android 2.2

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:17 pm
Samsung has mercifully confirmed at an event in New York this evening that all Galaxy S versions — including the Captivate, Epic 4G, Vibrant, and Fascinate — will be receiving updates to Android 2.2 Froyo later this year and offer compatibility with Flash 10.1. All of the devices will be shipping with Android 2.1 out of the gate, so considering that Froyo’s already launched, we’re sure there’ll be no shortage of pressure to get the updates fast-tracked. Sprint says it won’t be a long wait on the Epic, but otherwise, we don’t have any time frames at this point.

Sprint halts EVO 4G update due to reports of it bricking phones

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:23 am

Uh oh. There’s been a tiny little hitch in the latest EVO 4G update, which has resulted in a number of people finding their superphones becoming unusable. Aside from rooted handsets having their predictable woes with new official software, some users have found that applying the update twice bricked their phones, stock OS and all. That’s pretty worrying, particularly when you consider that checking for updates after a successful install gives you the option to apply it all over again. Sprint and HTC have acted quickly to pull the OTA for the moment, and promise to restore it as soon as its lethal streak has been ironed out:

While the vast majority of consumers successfully downloaded and installed the most recent HTC EVO 4G software update, we have received a handful of reports from customers having some issues with the update. In light of this, HTC and Sprint have decided to temporarily halt distribution of this software release until we can investigate further. We expect to be able to resume software updates shortly.

In the mean time, let’s all just sit, wait, and hope the sky doesn’t fall on our heads.

Toshiba cooks up 128GB NAND flash for next-gen phones and PMPs

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:17 am

Leave it to Toshiba to make even the latest smartphones feel somewhat undernourished. Quadrupling the current high-end standard of 32GB of embedded memory, the Japanese company has announced an all-new 128GB slab of storage, built on a 32nm production process. It’s somehow managed to fit sixteen 8GB NAND chips, plus their controller, inside a 1.4mm tall structure, and samples are about to exit the factory doors this September. A 64GB variant will also be making an appearance, with both scheduled to enter mass production sometime during the fourth quarter. Should go pretty nicely with that 2GHz beastphone Moto is planning, don’t you think?

AT&T users can keep $30 unlimited data when upgrading phones… unless they want tethering

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:18 pm

There’s naturally been a ton of feedback in the past few hours on AT&T’s new data pricing strategy, and the company has been responding to comments all morning over on its Facebook page; one of the key tidbits that’s come out of the discussion so far is that folks on the current $30 smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan when upgrading hardware. Translation: yes, you’ll be able to get a new iPhone without switching to the $25 / 2GB DataPro plan if you so choose. What you won’t be able to do, though, is keep the $30 plan and add on the $20 tethering option — tethering specifically requires DataPro, so your hopes and dreams of a soft 5GB cap are quashed (unless you want to pay $30 for 3GB of overage, of course).

On a related note, we’ve been tipped that some folks’ iPad orders from Apple have been pushed back to June 7 — an interesting coincidence, considering that’s when DataPlus and DataPro go live. If true, it’s likely so that Apple can pre-install new orders with updated software for managing the new plans, but it’s also a preemptive strike against a horde of people trying to grandfather into the $30 plan over the next few days.

[Thanks, John and Aaron]

Nokia N8’s USB On-The-Go support demoed, lesser phones turned into slaves

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:19 pm

Among the Nokia N8’s neater tricks is its support for USB On-The-Go, which basically lets you connect USB peripherals (flash drives, for example) to the phone and have it act as a host — a duty usually reserved for heavier-duty devices like PCs. Though the N8 is still a solid month or three away from release, we’re getting a nice little video demo on YouTube today of an N8 being walked through the paces of connecting both a plain-vanilla USB drive and another Symbian-based Nokia candybar (brownie points for naming the model in comments, by the way). Basically, you can treat the connected hardware as mass storage and browse it just as you would the N8’s internal space, which basically means you’ve got unlimited music capacity as long as you’ve got a pocket full of USB sticks and a micro USB-to-USB adapter cord. Follow the break for video.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
