PlayStation Move review

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:17 am

The PlayStation Move. It’s funny to think just 15 months have passed since Sony first unveiled its motion controller, and now we’re mere weeks away from hitting the retail market. To be sure, it’s not like the company didn’t have waggle on the mind already — patents dating as far back as 2005 reveal as much, and of course the incredible success of Nintendo’s Wii proved there’s a market for more physically exerting gameplay. And it’s not just PlayStation; Microsoft’s got its controller-free Kinect motion camera system coming this November. So, in the year where all major game consoles now ask you to get off the couch and earn arm muscle, how does Move fare? Read on for more!

Sony giving away PlayStation Move for block parties, along with completely wild freebies

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:17 pm

Looking for a free PlayStation Move setup and a bunch of useless schwag? Too bad you didn’t sign up for Sony’s Ultimate Block Party. In the vein of the hilarious Windows 7 and TiVo promo giveaways of yesteryear, PlayStation’s thrown a virtual bash that actually requires a modicum of interaction to properly enjoy this time. As this isn’t a retail Move package, there’s no traditional unboxing to be had, but soon-to-be-host Phil does show off a demo disk (with eight titles and uproarious setup guide) that we pray will be included in the final kit. Other than that, the promo box includes your standard array of party supplies — PlayStation Move cocktail napkins, Sports Champions mini-frisbees, plastic soda can handles, and the gift that keeps on giving: a bag of Kevin Butler button badges — because real boxers don’t do Tupperware. Spot all the goodies at our source link.

PlayStation 3 could get 3D depth slider

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:17 am

How will sir be having his gimmick today? The devs behind the upcoming Sly Cooper 3D compilation are wisely mulling over the idea of inserting a 3D-adjusting slider to let users decide just how much stereoscopy they want with their Sony-approved gaming. It’s argued that this should allow you greater positional flexibility when smacking fools down in three dimensions, as you’ll be able to manually toggle the depth of the 3D effect to suit your viewing angle. We were happy to see such an option introduced in the Nintendo 3DS at E3 and would similarly welcome its inclusion on the PS3 — though that’s no foregone conclusion as yet. All we can say for sure right now is that the stuff is adjustable, but it looks like it’ll be up to devs to roll their sleeves up and integrate the slider into their games. Hey, it’s the summer, not like they’ve got anything else to do, right?

PlayStation Blu-ray 3D update arrives in September; 3D photo, PlayTV and YouTube support to follow

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:18 am

Just in case you weren’t really sure how deep into this 3DTV thing Sony is, senior director of Sony Europe Mick Hocking announced the PS3’s update for Blu-ray 3D movie playback will be released in September — but it won’t stop there. Expect future firmware upgrades that give the PS3 3D rendering for photos (.mpo files), any broadcasts it can pick up on PlayTV, and even YouTube videos. Not running out the door to buy one yet? CVG reports the rest of the presentation was devoted to extolling the virtues of 3D to hardcore gamers in racing games, God of War, or LittleBigPlanet. Demos so far haven’t completely convinced us the PS3 is capable of rendering games in high enough resolution to satisfy, but if Fat Princess 2 features a good 3D implementation, someone hide our credit cards, please.

Hulu Plus will be a downloadable app on PS3, require PlayStation Plus subscription?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:17 pm

The mathematical symbols are aligned… and they’re pointing to a greater cash outlay if you want to have (a legitimate copy of) Hulu on your PlayStation 3. Technologizer recently discovered the highlighted line above in the source code for the Hulu website, and if correct, you’ll need a PlayStation Plus subscription on top of your Hulu Plus one in order to stream the best brain-numbing shows from broadcast TV. While that adds up to an additional $18 for three months or $50 annually on top of your $10 monthly Hulu Plus fee, it’s not like you’ll get a better deal on a different game console — Microsoft has confirmed Hulu will require Xbox Live Gold when it launches on Xbox 360 next year. Besides, this isn’t like those janky Netflix Instant Streaming Discs — further down the source code, there are hints that Hulu’s developing a bona fide app for PlayStation 3. See the relevant section of the code right after the break.

PlayStation Plus coming via PS3 firmware 3.40 (update: now available)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:18 pm

At last, the first post-E3 firmware update for the PlayStation 3, and as you might’ve suspected, this one’s got PlayStation Plus packed into the mix. We’ve talked about the service a bit so far, but to recap, $50 annual nets you a 50 percent discount on PSN titles, early access to betas, and one hour of demo time on select full titles (among other benefits). If you’re not willing to shell out the Ulysses S Grant, however, however, there’s a few other treats in the software patch, including five-star ratings for content purchased on the Store, video editor and uploader for Facebook and YouTube (note: not a video capture service, gotta use what the HDD already has), and expanded integration into Picasa and Facebook photo galleries. Speaking of Facebook, a new app will appear on the social site for showing off your PSN profile and befriending others. As usual, no exact date for the firmware is given, but if history’s any indication, it won’t be very long at all.

Update: We just checked our consoles and, sure enough, the update is live. We’re downloading now and will let you know if there’s anything peculiar.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Bloomberg: Hulu coming to PlayStation network ’soon’

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:17 am

It was just two weeks ago in the runup to E3 that Reuters spread rumors of Hulu coming to the Xbox 360 and the iPad as some sort of paid service, and now Bloomberg is adding to the chatter, saying that everyone’s favorite video service is also in talks to become part of Sony’s Playstation Network and appear on the PS3 “soon.” As with the previous rumors, Hulu on PS3 is said to be a paid service, but nothing’s actually confirmed yet. So is Hulu playing Microsoft, Sony and Apple against each other in a bid to collect the biggest exclusivity fee possible, or are we about to see an aggressive Netflix-style multiplatform rollout? We’ll see.

Nyko charge base for PlayStation Move available for pre-order

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:17 pm

Yes, it looks like the PlayStation Move accessories are starting to trickle in. While we’re still lusting after the shooting attachment, we do realize the need for more modest hardware such as that supplied by Nyko. The Charge Station is a pretty straightforward affair: it features four ports for powering up as many Motion Controllers and / or Navigation Controllers, and can be pre-ordered from Amazon for $20. On a related note, we can’t wait to see what CTA comes up with for its Move accessories. We hope there are some Sony-compatible wings in our future!

PlayStation Move bundle up for pre-order at Best Buy and GameStop

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:17 pm

We’re sure every other retailer in the world will have PlayStation Move orders up in the next week or so, but Best Buy and GameStop are leading the charge: the $99 Move bundle that include the PS Eye, a Move controller and Sports Champions is now available for pre-order, with an estimated delivery date between November 1st and the 6th — just a little bit after the announced September 19th launch date. We’re sure that’ll be revised as things get firmed up, though. So, what’s it going to be? Considering we’re still guessing at Microsoft’s final Kinect pricing, we’d say the decision’s a tough one, but honestly, you know we’re totally buying all of this stuff and having an all-night dance off.

[Thanks, William]

PlayStation Move demoed for 30 minutes, German-style

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:17 pm

German publication GamersGlobal may not be familiar to you, but we expect you’ll recognize those shiny orbs — somehow, the website managed to pry a pair of PlayStation Move motion controllers and software away from Sony long enough to shoot an extensive video demo. While we’re admittedly jealous of our distant neighbors, we wholeheartedly recommend watching their 30 minute hands-on with Disc Golf, Archery and more — we’ve had a turn or two in PlayStation Move’s multicolored spotlight already, and we suppose it’s time to pass on the torch. Video after the break.
