Dell Streak available for purchase ‘in late July,’ says US product page

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:19 pm

It’s funny to think, even after reviewing the device (thrice, at this point), that we still don’t have an US release date for Dell’s Streak. The company’s been uncharacteristically coy, but the stateside product page does offer this tantalizing tidbit: “available for purchase in late July.” That gives us a good 10-day window, so you’ve been eyeballing that pre-sale button with intent to click, now might be the time jump on the list.

Apple patent application details instant product research via iPhone, more NFC possibilities

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:18 pm

Past Apple patent applications have already offered some evidence that the company is at least thinking about NFC-enhanced apps on the iPhone, and a recently published application has now tossed out one more possible application: instant product research. That would apparently be done using either NFC (or near field communication) or a simple barcode scan, which would let you easily access product reviews, user manuals and other information about products before you purchase them — the application even includes the example of an NFC-enabled restaurant menu that would let you check nutritional information before you order. Somewhat interestingly, both this and and Apple’s previous NFC-related patent application use “+” in the app’s names (Products+ and Concert Tickets+), although that could simply be the work of one patent attorney, and not evidence of an overarching Apple strategy.

iWork for iPhone revealed by AppleCare product description?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:17 am

AppleCare Protection Plan may cover certain types of damage, but it sure didn’t stop up today’s alleged leak — if you pick an unlocked iPhone at the online Apple Store for Canada, Australia or the UK today and click the “Learn more” button on the AppleCare option, you’ll be treated to this “iWork for iPhone” containing screen. Coupled with the “Open in Keynote” prompt we saw a few weeks back, we may picking up the crumbs of a real app here, even if productivity isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when fondling that Retina Display.

Intel Arrandale shortages leading to premium prices, potential product delays

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:19 am

Now this might explain Apple’s curious choice to not upgrade the 13-inch MacBook Pro to a Core 2010 CPU. Yahoo! News is reporting shortages of the more budget-minded Core i3 and i5 laptop processors launched by Intel this January, which has led to chip buyers outbidding each other to the point of paying 20 percent premiums on contract prices. That’s according to US chip distributor Converge, while research firm CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets estimates that product rollouts could be delayed by up to three months as a result. What has Intel got to say for itself?

“We don’t comment on speculation, what I can say is that we are pleased with the strong product demand for our laptop platforms.”

Well sure, you get paid more on a per-CPU basis, why wouldn’t you be pleased? On a more serious note, during Intel’s latest earnings call both Paul Otellini and CFO Stacy Smith expressed their surprise at the vast demand for their 32nm products, with Smith noting that their production of 32nm chips is the fastest ramping process in the company’s history. So there’s not really any villainy afoot here, just good old demand catching supply napping.

This day in Engadget: RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis talks about his first “touch product”

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:19 am

Welcome to ‘This day in Engadget‘, where we crack open the archives and take a whimsical look back at the memories and moments of our storied past. Please join us on this trip down random access memory lane.

Earlier today, RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis laid down a doozy when he said that full touchscreen phones “aren’t that popular” — but last year at this time (on April 16th!) he was scrambling to explain why the BlackBerry Storm failed to live up to high expectations. Speaking to Laptop, Mike explained that the Storm was RIM’s first “touch product,” explaining that “nobody gets it perfect out the door.” RIM’s head honchos are well known for their candor, so it’s no surprise that he’s now talking trash on tablets. Still, you have to admire any company that proclaims buggy software the new reality, right?

Also on this date:

April 16th, 2009: Apple hit back at Microsoft’s Laptop Hunter ads, Nokia’s profits were reported to have dropped 90 percent in the first quart of the year, a hellraising carrier pigeon was reported to have been caught red handed smuggling cellphone parts into a prison, and a new atomic clock claimed to be the most accurate in the world.

April 16th, 2008:
Microsoft hatched a Bruce Springsteen-laden promo vid for Vista, Republican lawmakers accused Google of gaming the 700Mhz auction, and a computer synthesizer gave voice to Neanderthal man.

April 16th, 2007:
A few screenshots of Leopard Beta 9a410 shocked the internet, Microsoft admitted it was possible the Xbox 360 was scratchin’ discs, Vonage admitted it was pretty much screwed, and the RED ONE got a hands-on.

April 16th, 2006: Noelle the Robot gave birth (sort of), a Darmouth professor was reported to have invented instant de-icing film, and the Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD player got disassembled, possibly predicting its death.

April 16th, 2005: Future-minded peeps started thinking past Tiger, the AirScooter II was shown off, and a disgusting Hello Kitty (seriously, this thing couldn’t have been officially licensed) BE@RBRICK set was unleashed.

April 16th, 2004
:
Phil Torrone showed us how to read RSS feeds on an iPod, the man behind Nokia’s N-Gage got interviewed, and mobile social networking seemed like something that could take off.

Ask Engadget: best method or product for organizing wall outlets?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 am

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from deciBels, who is sick and tired of only being able to utilize 4 of the 7 outlets in a conventional power strip. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“I am absolutely dying to know what the best product(s) are to maximize and organize power outlets. I have 9 cables at one outlet (big nest of cables). I ran out of space there and had to go to a completely different wall to find 2 more vacancies. That’s without actually plugging in everything I would like to. I’m not a fan of having to compromise but when it comes to outlets, I’m being beat! Help me Engadget!”

You heard the man, help him! Anyone know of any consumer-friendly power strips that allow for larger wall warts? Any tricks the trade to maximizing space down there? Sharing is caring, y’all.
