Apple starts refunding Bumper purchases automagically

Automatic refunds, or so the email says. We’ve been on the receiving end of a deluge of tips this morning pointing out that Apple has begun funneling cash back into its users’ pockets — a most unusual event, to be sure — to live up to its retroactive promise of free Bumpers for all (who buy their iPhone 4 before September 30). If the particular wording is to be trusted, that should mean that even those who haven’t yet bothered to put in a claim, but did purchase a Bumper, will find themselves enriched in due course. Apple estimates this bandaid solution to its antenna problems will cost $175 million in real cash money, but we suspect the biggest price to pay will be in the form of pride and reputation.

Kindle’s digital book sales overtake hardcover, device purchases triple after price drop

While Amazon is being as coy as usual when it comes to an actual number (still keeping to the vague “millions” figure), the company has revealed that sales of its Kindle hardware has tripled since the price took a plunge from $259 to $189. While it’s hard to gauge just how many champagne corks are being popped over that statistic, news that downloaded kindle books has overtaken its hardcover brethren is certainly cause for major celebration. According to a press release, 143 Kindle books have been sold for every 100 hardcovers in the past three months, and that ratio is a more impressive 9:2 if you only look at this past month. Before you start asking about the obvious caveats, the data both include sales of hardcovers where no Kindle equivalent exists and exclude free Kindle downloads — meaning if those weren’t considered, the ratio would be even greater. Guess the agency pricing model didn’t deter too many customers. Since you’re in such a good mood, Amazon, how about a slimmer model to satiate the remaining holdouts?

Bing Entertainment integrates Zune Marketplace purchases, improves Microsoft’s media swagger

Bing, Microsoft’s “decision engine,” is wading into the entertainment realm today with the revelation that searches for music, lyrics, games, TV shows, and movies will get a new special sauce treatment from here on out. You’ll now be able to play 100 basic games right in your search results, along with full-length streaming of songs (first time only, 30 seconds thereafter) from a 5 million-strong catalog. The latter is augmented with “one-click” purchases from the Zune Marketplace (directly through the web, no need to launch the app), Amazon, or iTunes music libraries. Movie tickets are promised to be similarly easy to buy, though the biggest new feature might well be the Bing.com/entertainment page, which acts as a portal into your media consumption with a selection of the most popular content in each category. It doesn’t look terribly different from the iTunes storefront, but given its partnership with Apple’s digital music shop, we doubt Bing’s Entertainment section is perceived as much of a threat — not yet, anyway. As to that other search giant, Google’s been said to already be putting together a music store of its own. Man, all this integration and interconnectedness — just where will it end?

Study finds commercial-skipping DVRs don’t affect purchases, ‘TiVo effect’ may not exist

Two years back, consumer research told us the vast majority of DVR users skipped commercials; now, statisticians at Duke University say that’s not the case. More importantly, even those who do hit that oh-so-tempting skip button aren’t necessarily spending less on advertised products as a result. Pulling data from over 1,200 TiVo boxes over the course of three years, Professor Carl Mela and colleagues found that a staggering 95 percent of television was watched live instead of recorded, giving viewers no opportunity to skip, and even when there was an opportunity, users took it only 6.5 percent of the time.

Moreover, every attempt the researchers made to find a “TiVo effect” failed — comparing those who had DVRs with those who didn’t, they found no significant difference in the amount TV watchers spent on nine different goods (including cleaning and grooming products) advertised. This could be for a variety of reasons — perhaps advertising doesn’t work, period, or perhaps those without DVRs “skipped” commercials simply by walking out of the room — but no matter the reason, it seems these days television advertisers don’t have quite so much to fear.

Apple purchases Intrinsity, just 498 more ARM licensees to go

With P.A. Semi under its belt, and now “people familiar with the deal” reporting to The New York Times that a purchase of Intrinsity is a go, Apple’s march to ARM preeminence is becoming much more clear. A rumor about an Intrinsity purchase surfaced a few weeks ago when the processor design firm’s website went down and a few of its employees switched their LinkedIn employee status over to Apple, but now we’ve got some solid confirmation — though Apple and Intrinsity are still staying tight-lipped about the deal. Intrinsity’s rumored contribution to the iPad’s A4 chip is the a modified A8 core it designed dubbed the Hummingbird, which squeezes 1GHz of performance out of a chip regularly limited to a mere 650MHz. It’s unlikely that this acquisition will shed much more light on the internals of the iPad or future Apple devices — in fact, it might help obfuscate them — but it’s clear that Apple is dead set on owning as much IP and “smart people” in relation to ARM as it can muster. Of course, the next big rumor on this front is a purchase of ARM itself, but that’s an entirely different can of worms.
