Keepin’ it real fake: TESO LPAD runs ‘MeGoo’ or ‘Andriod’ on Moorestown

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:17 am

Chinese company TESO has an unrequited love for all things Apple. Not that it cares, we’re sure it’s doing just fine on the grey market with its KIRFy Cupertino crafts. But maybe it’s time for this Shenzhen cloner to go mainstream with what’s purported to be a 9.7-inch tablet running “MeGoo” (a MeeGo typo, certainly) or “Andriod2.2″ (that’d be Froyo) OSes on a 14-mm thick LPAD powered by Intel’s newest 1.9GHz Z600-series Moorestown processor. Of course, it’s a hell of a lot easier to list specs on paper than it is to ship highly spec’d product. And given TESO’s inability to correctly copy the names of its choosen operating systems onto a sheet of paper, what hope is there of it cloning the user experience of a class-leading tablet?

HP Slate lookalike spotted in China, might beat the real thing to the market

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:18 pm

Once again, China has proven to the world that it’s the place to be for all sorts of gadgetry miracle. Just look at this 10-inch Windows 7 tablet here — it may not be a full clone of the forthcoming 8.9-inch HP Slate, but it does come with a couple of interesting features: a 1366 x 768 resistive multitouch display (ideal for tackling the complicated Chinese characters with a stylus) and a webcam. You’ll also find a handful of regular tidbits on this 1.66GHz Atom N450 device: a regular USB port coupled by a mini version, 3.5mm headphone jack, VGA port, LAN port, accelerometer, Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G. Oh, and you’ll get a free stand, too, but we’ll be minding our own business until this no-frills tablet gets a price.

AirTurn’s BT-105 footpedal is a real page turner (video)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:19 am

If you carry your sheet music in a laptop, AirTurn’s got a USB dongle for that, but if you’ve migrated your musical cues to an certain slate, never fear, Bluetooth is on the way. The AirTurn BT-105 will bring the company’s page turning technology to iPad, using a transmitter that attaches to standard professional footswitches, allowing you to turn full pages and half pages of sheet music while keeping hands firmly affixed to your instrument. Though there’s no word on price, we imagine it’ll cost close to the existing 2.4GHz version, which runs from $40 for a dongle to $100 for a package with two Boss pedals, and when it surfaces in Q4 of this year, we’re hoping it will extend bicycling input to all the other wild and crazy apps you dream up. PR and video after the break.

First real Symbian^4 screen shots emerge

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:18 am

We’d argue that the “wow” factor still isn’t there quite yet, but we’ll admit: Symbian^4 is clearly going to be a bit of a departure from the versions that came before it. The Symbian Foundation has posted the first handful of home screen UI shots on its developer wiki recently showing redesigned widgets, app categories and search, pop-up menus, and a standard-issue numeric touchscreen keypad — and unlike Nokia’s concept videos from before, these are from a real emulator running real code. While MeeGo is still expected to dominate the high end of its range, Nokia’s expecting to use Symbian^4 in at least some of its devices by early 2011 — and knowing how these guys like to go big with global roll-outs spanning tens or hundreds of millions of devices, this is a UI you might end up getting to know extremely well within a year or two.

Keepin’ it real fake: Likea Leica, only not

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:17 am

Of all the KIRFs in all the world, this might be one of the laziest. Sure, aesthetically it does a fine job of aping the Leica rangefinder it takes as its “inspiration,” but the Likea camera goes downhill very quickly when you move in a little closer. The first thing you’ll notice is that, instead of the finely engineered Leica body, this thing is made out of, well, cardboard. Then you find out that the pinhole element isn’t provided in the box and you’re faced with the impossible judgment of deciding whether the need for a pinhole element or its omission is the worse offense. Ah well, what do you expect for 20 bucks? Just go buy some film and let your imagination fill the (vast) gap between the Likea and the real stuff.

Steve Jobs emails ‘are real’ claims Boy Genius Report, says Apple PR lied to press

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:17 pm

Earlier this week we reported on a story that had been doing the rounds — another Steve Jobs email thread with an irate customer. Like many other stories about Jobs’ emails to customers, this yarn centered around a user disappointed with his iPhone 4’s service, and Steve’s flippant responses. The first time we saw the story crop up, we were suspicious of its validity (and frankly, newsworthiness), and we became even more suspicious after AppleInsider ran an article claiming that the source of the supposed emails had been shopping the tale for cash (Engadget was not contacted by the source). We did eventually cover the story, but only after Apple itself responded to the tale, claiming — first to Fortune and then to us — that the emails were false, and the exchange had not happened. That struck us as particularly newsworthy, because in all our years of reporting on Steve Jobs’ wild personal emails (of which there are many, many examples), we’d never heard Apple refute that the emails were coming from him.

Now, Boy Genius Report (where the original story appeared) has fired back, emphatically claiming that the emails are real, and that the proof is in the original message headers which the site has been given access to by the source. BGR goes one step further as well, and essentially accuses Apple PR of spinning this story to news outlets to suit its needs. And let’s not mince words — the claim is that Apple PR is lying to the press. The proof which BGR offers is no more or less convincing to us than the site’s previous post on the subject; email headers and timestamps can be faked. Still, it is notable that Boy Genius is pushing back on this story, and we certainly don’t believe the blog would knowingly publish a false email thread. As TechCrunch points out in its take on the matter, PR reps often give vague, sugarcoated, or misleading information to news sites, but there has never been a time when Apple’s PR has outright lied to major publications (that we know of). That would be a mess of epic proportions, and we can’t really fathom why they would go to the trouble. The company has obviously let stuff like this slide for years — this seems like an odd time (and a relatively minor story) to get up in arms about it. We’ve reached out to Apple for further statement on this, and will report back as soon as we hear something. In the meantime, take a look at the source link and see what BGR has to say on the matter.

Keepin’ it real fake: Air Phone NO. 4 out-KIRFs the KIRFs with FaceTime app

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:17 pm
We’ve already seen some pretty good iPhone 4 KIRFs, but it looks like there’s a new king in town: the Air Phone NO. 4. Not only does it faithfully emulate the iPhone 4’s hardware design with what we can only assume is the highest quality materials (it even eliminates those pesky seams), but it packs a “non-smartphone OS” that has all your favorite apps including Safari, Mail, “Games,” “Sound” and, last but not least, FaceTime — or a FaceTime icon, at least. Curious to see what other wonders await behind that familiar veneer? Then you can apparently snag one of these in China right now for just $100.

iPhone 4 gets preliminary ‘userland’ jailbreak, real freedom still forthcoming

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 2:18 am

The most Twitter-vocal iPhone Dev Team member, Mr. MuscleNerd himself, has just posted a screenshot from a jailbroken iPhone 4. Before you get too excited, however, you should know that this is just a preliminary “userland” jailbreak, which means it uses Apple software to happen, and it’s not of a low enough level to really be worth releasing, since it’s easy for Apple to patch. Instead it’s an important step toward a real, low-level jailbreak that can actually be released. We’d feign pins and needles if this community wasn’t so gosh darned amazing at hacking these phones: we’re sure that real jailbreak will be along shortly.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Keepin’ it real fake: Nokia X5 goes shanzhai in record time

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:17 am
Is this a new record? Not twelve hours after the Nokia X5 slider got official in Singapore, our friend Albert spotted this curious square-shaped, Nokia-branded KIRF in a flea market in Manaus, Brazil. Of course, this raises the horrible possibility that this odd-ball form factor just might be catching on somewhere — but we’re going to try and put it out of our minds it for the time being.

Rock Band 3 gets ‘Pro’ mode, real guitar hybrid controller and keytar revealed — Devo be praised

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 am

Wrap your head around this one: a 150-button guitar peripheral. That’s for the pro version of Rock Band 3, whose goal is to actually turn the controllers into something more fitting of actual musicianship in a separate, more advanced “Pro” mode (the core game is still intact for those want it). First up is the aforementioned two-octave keyboard / keytar, whose difficulty goes from pressing within one of five ranges to actual dead-on notes. For drums, the three cymbals can now actually function as separate notes, sharing three lanes but given their own shape to know which to hit. Guitar, however, is a whole new beast. A $150 Fender Mustang pro (pictured up top) boasts 17 frets and 6 strings of accurate placement for a total of 102 buttons, and six nylon strings that must be plucked individually. Of course, if that hits the uncanny valley of plastic peripherals too closely, there’s a Rock Band 3 Squier Stratocaster that’ll be coming out that can actually be used as a real guitar or a Pro model. Vocal melodies from Beatles Rock Band carry over here. No concrete release date; head on over to new Joystiq for the preview, or if you want to see true trendsetters, watch Devo predict this game all the way from 1982 — that video’s after the break.
