Saudi Arabia pleased by RIM’s concession, says BlackBerry messaging can stay for now

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 3:18 pm

The forty-eight hour deadline came and went, but Saudi Arabia didn’t pull the plug — citing a “positive development” in RIM’s efforts to appease Saudi regulators, the country has allowed BlackBerry messaging services to continue for the time being. Saudi Arabia’s Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) didn’t specify what the aforementioned “development” was, but thanks to well-placed anonymous sources we can hazard a guess: “CITC will now be able to monitor communications via messaging services,” one Saudi telecom official told the Wall Street Journal, and Reuters reports that RIM will hand over BlackBerry decryption codes to the country. That’s all for now, but expect this issue to bubble back to the surface again in the United Arab Emirates come October.

RIM’s Lazaridis: if goverments can’t deal with the internet, ‘they should shut it off’

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:18 pm

RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis has made some pretty bold statements in the past, but he may just have topped himself in responding to the recent issue of countries banning or threatening to ban BlackBerrys — to which you can now add Indonesia to the list. Speaking with The Wall Street Journal in what’s described as a “fiery” interview, Lazaridis said that “this is about the Internet,” and that “everything on the Internet is encrypted. This not a BlackBerry-only issue,” before adding that if “they can’t deal with the Internet, they should shut it off.” But that’s not all. Lazaridis further went on to saying that “we’re going to continue to work with them to make sure they understand the reality of the Internet,” noting that “a lot of these people don’t have Ph.Ds, and they don’t have a degree in computer science.” Despite those statements, however, Lazaridis seems confident that the situation will get sorted out, saying that it “will get resolved if there is a chance for rational discussion.”

RIM’s 9.7-inch Blackpad rumored for November launch — yes, Blackpad

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:18 pm

We were secretly hoping that RIM’s acquisition of the blackpad.com domain name was nothing more than a joke (or a preventative measure, at worse), but it sure sounds as if that’ll be the name the folks in Waterloo go with come this winter. According to unnamed sources who have unloaded new information to Bloomberg, RIM’s first tablet will actually be “introduced in November,” though there’s no clear indication as to when it’ll ship. Said sources have also stated that the device will sport a 9.7-inch display, inbuilt WiFi and Bluetooth, and a downright comical Blackpad label. We get the BlackBerry link and all, but really? Here’s hoping for a last minute change of heart.

[Thanks, Simon]

RIM’s BlackBerry Curve 9300 spotted in T-Mobile branding (update)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:17 pm

It’s certainly not the first time we’ve seen this here BlackBerry (with “this here” meaning “Curve 9300“), but it’s the first time we’ve seen it outfitted in carrier clothing. Notice that T-Mobile logo at the bottom? That’s the clearest indication yet that this particular ‘Berry will soon be headed to T-Mob, but given that it’s unlikely to support an upgrade to BlackBerry OS 6, your off-the-chart excitement level may indeed be unwarranted. At any rate, we’re also hearing that Rogers in Canada will be snagging this at launch, but we’ll be passing along official details just as soon as we get them.

Update: As it turns out, this actually isn’t the first time we’ve seen a magenta-scarved Curve 9300, just the one that has us most convinced it’s got a date with destiny. Not to mention stateside availability.

RIM’s Blackberry Tablet might be seven inches, feature dual cameras and 1GHz CPU?

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:18 pm

The rumor mill’s been churning out quite the picture of RIM’s Blackberry tablet over the past several months, and it’s a research analyst who’s most recently picked up the brush — Ashok Kumar of Rodman & Renshaw, to be precise, who anticipates a 7-inch touchscreen device with a 1GHz processor, plus front- and back-facing cameras for video chat. Since that’s a good 1.9 inches smaller than the slate rumored a couple months back, this latest spiel fills us with doubt… but hey, it’s not like we had confirmation that RIM was even producing such a device, anyhow. It may be a while before we find out for sure, as Kumar told investors that even should the company succeed in an attempt to move up the schedule, the device still wouldn’t launch until the end of the year.

RIM’s BlackBerry tablet starting to sound suspiciously like a Foleo

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:17 pm

So BGR is reporting that it has “confirmed with multiple sources” that RIM’s alleged BlackBerry tablet device is very real — despite Mike Lazaridis’ recent downer comments on the subject — and that it’ll have an 8.9-inch screen, WiFi, and Bluetooth connectivity to hook up with your phone. Oh yeah, about that Bluetooth connectivity: the tablet is being billed as a “companion” device, something to use when you need a little bit more horsepower and screen real estate for multimedia and the like. Sound familiar? Yeah, Palm tried this with famously catastrophic results a while back — and considering RIM’s ultra-conservative policy on product innovation, we can’t imagine things going any better up in Waterloo. It’s apparently slated for a December release with engineers scrambling to get it released even sooner… and, you know, discontinued sooner, too.

RIM’s BlackBerry T slider pictured again, shows off OS 6 infusion

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:17 am

RIM's BlackBerry T slider pictured again, showing off OS 6 infusionIt’s escaped again, the mysterious BlackBerry ‘T’ (for Talladega) slider that we’ve seen making the rounds over the past few months. These new pictures from Mr. Blurrycam (courtesy of BBLeaks) don’t show us anything new on the hardware, but do show the phone running OS 6. Assuming it’s scheduled to launch alongside that latest flavor of OS we should be seeing it before the third quarter is through — probably about the same time that godawful 9670 crawls to retail. Deciding between the two? That should not be difficult.

RIM’s Mike Lazaridis makes the case for QWERTY keyboards on phones, says market for tablets not ‘clear yet’

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:19 am

Both of RIM’s co-CEOs have reputations for being pretty opinionated dudes, and we feel like Mike Lazaridis in particular would go to the ends of the Earth to support BlackBerry’s business model — but at the cost of one of his own products? Speaking at a tech conference in Toronto today, Lazaridis apparently said that the long-term viability of the tablet market (iPad included) is in doubt, especially as smartphones get more powerful; that would probably serve to quash the rumors from a few days back that the company is working on its own large-display device for release later this year. More interestingly, though, were his comments that full touchscreen phones like the iPhone “aren’t that popular” — that’s news to us — and that many that end up buying them ultimately go back to a physical keyboard handset. You know, like a Bold or a Curve, for instance.

Whether Lazaridis is conveniently forgetting the existence of his own Storm and Storm2, suggesting that touchscreen devices don’t have a long-term future at RIM, or just saying that they’ll remain a niche play for the company going forward is unclear — but any way you slice it, we’d say it’s a pretty significant dis for the Storm series and its owners. Looking at the bigger picture, it might also be a sign that these guys are still very much on the fast track to becoming the next Windows Mobile — dinosaurs paralyzed by their own past successes — but who knows? Maybe there’ll always be limitless demand for an endless array of barely iterative hardware paired to a decade-old user interface.

Update: We’ve received the full transcript of Mike’s session from the conference relating specifically to the touchscreen phone and tablet comments, and the reality is quite a bit different from the summary we’d been working from before. As tablets go, he says that “you can’t say what’s the market for tablets in exclusion of… other devices” — a fair argument, considering that the iPad’s ultimate target demographic still isn’t totally fleshed out — and actually never disrespects touchscreen phones outright, instead saying that the “QWERTY push messaging experience” is still “really, really important” while acknowledging that the company “[continues] to evolve with the research and [investment] in the Storm technology to make sure we get those right.” Follow the break for the transcript.
