Monsoon Vulkano do-it-all media box starts shipping, gets unboxed

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 pm

Looking for one box to rule them all? If so, you must have glossed right over Monsoon’s Vulkano launch, but lucky for you, there’s a reminder coming in the form of a ‘now shipping’ proclamation. Just weeks after the $379 mega-box — which aims to replace all of those other STBs under your television — went up for pre-order, the earliest of adopters have started to receive their devices. We’re still waiting on a proper critique, but if you’re yearning to have a glance at what the future of media looks like, give those links below a look. Just kidding about that last part, by the way.

[Thanks, Dan]

Sigma’s mysterious SD15 DSLR finally ships to US, gets unboxed enthusiastically

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:17 am

We’ve all waited close to two years for this day to come, and now that it has, just a single question remains: “Does your credit card have the space?” Sigma’s SD15 — which is outfitted with a 14 megapixel Foveon X3 sensor, 3-inch LCD, True II processor, an ISO range from 50 to 3,200 extended) and support for SD / SDHC cards — is now available to order on American soil. Better still, both B&H Photo and Adorama show the beast as “in stock” for just under a grand ($989, if we’re counting), and the fine folks over at Akihabara News have managed to wrangle one for a glorious unboxing. Dig into those links below if you’re hungry for more, but don’t blame us if you come away a fair bit poorer.

Dell Streak’s supposed US packaging is gorgeous, unboxed with elegance

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:18 am

Well, the Brits ain’t gonna be happy when they see this in the AM. What we’re looking at here is presumably the Dell Streak’s final US packaging — a far cry from the cardboard boxes that the Englishmen are given (and let’s not forget the silly photoshop error on the top). If the features list is correct, this five-inch Android phone is definitely headed to AT&T’s 850MHz 3G band for now (hang in there, T-Mobile fans). Other than that, the accessories and the phone itself look identical to what we’ve got in London, but we totally wouldn’t mind getting hold of this sexy acrylic box — it’d make a pretty cool cradle, don’t you think? Head over to the source link to feed your eyes.

Virgin Mobile’s pre-paid MIFI spotted, purchased, unboxed, and photographed

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:18 am
Sure, Virgin Mobile’s MIFI isn’t due out until Monday — but that hasn’t stopped one lucky shopper from finding one on the shelves of his local Best Buy yesterday. The enigmatic reader (only identified by the initials “NS”) even went so far as to include some unboxing pictures for our (and your) pleasure. Between this, and Sprint’s recent Beyond Talk announcement, it looks like 2010 is shaping up to be a good year for pre-paid wireless.

[Thanks, NS]

Pandora handheld now shipping: first mass-produced unit unboxed, world somehow survives

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 6:17 am

The open-source Pandora handheld has had a long and arduous time to market, but the days of delay are apparently at an end. You gaze upon the very first Pandora off the assembly line — the fruit of over two years labor — and project leaders are presently shipping out the rest of the first completed batch, with scores if not hundreds already on the way. GP32X forum mod X68000 got this unit for his help in construction, which means you can see Pandora’s box literally opened at our source link (har har). Puns not your thing? Spot a batch of handhelds at the soldering station instead, right after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Lenovo LePhone unboxed, exhaustively reviewed ahead of launch in China

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 5:17 pm

We’re not sure how we missed this one, but it’s better late than never — turns out some lucky jerks in China were given a Lenovo LePhone to play with back in mid-April, and the guys at Sooyuu have just finished the fifth and final part of their lengthy review, just in time for the May launch. We weren’t expecting any changes since our last encounter at CES, but apparently the 3.7-inch screen’s now been upgraded from LCD to AMOLED, and like the Palm Pre, the LePhone also sports a gesture area below the screen. Of course, there’s also the never-before-seen packaging that we totally dig, not to mention the bundled goodies such as a leather case, a noise-isolation handsfree kit (but sans music and volume control), plus a magnetic dock adapter. As for software, the reviewer praises Lenovo’s snappy, heavily customized Android with its vast Chinese social networking service integration, music store, video apps, and an impressive Chinese turn-by-turn navigation suite. We almost want to adopt this baby, only to be let down by its 3.2-megapixel camera’s mediocre quality, lack of flash, and inability to autofocus. Anyhow, you can be the final judge — head over to Sooyuu for plenty more pictures.

AT&T Palm Pre Plus unboxed in glorious, orange detail

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:18 am
AT&T Palm Pre Plus unboxed in glorious, orange detail

We still don’t have a firm date for when Palm’s current wunderphone will be hitting AT&T’s soothingly-colored retail establishments (the site still says “coming soon”), but we do now have confirmation that at least one handset has reached its destination. A tipster was kind enough to send us these photos of an AT&T Pre Plus escaping its creamsicle confines and powering on for the first time. This doesn’t look like a retail unit, likely one of AT&T’s “practice” Pre Plus models that were supposed to ship earlier this month or some other promo phone, but regardless we’re guessing that we’re not far from yet another group of subscribers being able to massage the keys on this slider.

[Thanks, gueriLLaPunK]

Acer Aspire 1825PTZ convertible tablet unboxed for your pleasure (video)

Acer Aspire 1825PTZ convertible tablet unboxed for your pleasure on video

Another tablet has entered the fray, the Acer Aspire 1825PTZ convertible — a little sub-notebook that sits just above a netbook in terms of specs, but isn’t much larger than your average Eee. NewGadgets.de has managed to get its hands on one and was kind enough to hit the record button for that special moment of unboxing, sharing the joy as this 11.6-inch capacitive touchscreen’d model entered the world. Inside, the machine sports a 1.3GHz SU4100 Pentium processor, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB disk drive, 802.11b/g/n wireless along with Bluetooth, and a six-cell battery. Sadly the video after the break doesn’t actually entail turning the thing on, but hopefully that’ll be part of a big-budget sequel. We hear Michael Bay has signed on to direct.
