Netflix Watch Instantly title search flips on for all PS3 users

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:17 pm

Being tied to a disc hasn’t made for the easiest Netflix Watch Instantly experience on the PlayStation 3, but it has its benefits, and now that includes the ability for all users to search its library directly on the console. This feature’s been available to some for months before it was even announced the Xbox 360 would get parity in a fall update, but we can confirm it’s currently rolling out to all PS3 users. It should automatically update the next time you’re watching, so just slide left from Instant Queue on the top bar to live the glorious life of title searching that you deserve.

Netflix plans discless Watch Instantly on the PS3 by late October, more ‘pure streaming’ worldwide

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:17 am

It’s still a pretty big window, but Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has narrowed down the time until we can expect a disc-free streaming experience on our PS3s from “later this year” to some time before its next earning call, which should happen around October 21. Other notes from the Q2 highlights included a shoutout to Hulu Plus, where Netflix “plans to learn what customers like about Hulu Plus” and use that to enhance its service, as well as the upcoming launch of a streaming service in Canada, and how the lessons learned may be applied to other “pure streaming” offerings internationally in the future. Investors aren’t too happy the company missed earnings projections, but we’re figuring once they close the ETrade window and pick up a Shockaxis they’ll start to get over it.

Audi Cam lets you watch the entire repair from your mechanic’s point of view

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 1:17 am

Need to get a critical tune-up, but don’t trust the factory techs not to Ferris Bueller your ride? If you live in the UK and drive an Audi, you’ll have technology on your side. Following a successful pilot program, the German manufacturer’s outfitting each Audi Centre in Britain with helmet cameras and two-way radios to let customers monitor the entire job. While this sounds fantastic from a consumer standpoint, you’ll see mechanics and IT professionals in the audience sadly shaking their heads — if you’ve ever had to explain a technical product to an Average Joe who thinks they know better than yourself, you’ll understand there are certain disadvantages to this idea. PR after the break.

Mongoose Studio’s dozen iPod cluster display is an expensive way to watch Tron (video)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 8:18 pm
Mongoose Studio's 12 iPhone cluster display is an expensive way to watch Tron (video)

Most of us would be happy to get video to play on a single video to play on our PMP without having to run it through some sort of transcoder first, but the folks at Mongoose Studio needed something more complex. They’ve released a video of a project that’s been in the works for some time, clustering 12 iPod touches into a sort of bezel-riffic widescreen display. All are controlled by a master, 13th iPod that can cause them to display a clock in the interest of verifying synchronization (which is far from perfect, as you’ll see in the embed below), or to trigger the playing of a movie. We’re guessing that the footage must be manually split into appropriate files for each device, and we’re also guessing that horrible things would happen should someone come along and re-shuffle them. But, if you have a lot of friends with iPhones and a lot of free time to prep the film, this could make for a rather interesting movie night — until someone gets a call, that is.

iPhone 4 launch day line watch (update: Woz in action)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:18 pm

From the London store

Welcome to the latest installment of our annual tradition: the iPhone launch day queue experience in pictorial form. London’s getting the party started early (not as early as some, admittedly) with a sizable crowd turning the corner from the Apple Store at Regent Street, but we’ll keep this post updated with imagery from all over the place. Wouldn’t mind if you helped us out with a few of your own pics, either. You know where to send them in by now, and once you’ve done that, feel free to slide past the break to see how everyone else is doing it.

Update: Now with reports from San Francisco!

Update 2:
NY joins the fray!

Update 3: We added some of the more interesting reader-submitted stories.

Update 4: Reports from Palo Alto and San Jose, California!

Update 5: London’s doors have swung open and we’re now busy activating our brand new Apple phones.

Update 6: Woz and his Segway make their regular appearance at the San Jose Valley Fair Apple Store.

Update 7: We’re adding a bunch of reader reports. Even as Apple opens its doors to pre-orderers in the US, the lines remain crazy.

Steampunk Arduino Watch tells time, plays Breakout, thrills the world

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 11:18 am

We’ve seen no shortage of homegrown watches in our lifetime, and the quantity of Arduino-based gadgetry that graces the web each day might just outnumber the quantity of humans incensed by BP right now. But so far as we can tell, this is the first instance we’ve seen of the two combining in holy matrimony. The delicately crafted Arduino Watch: Steampunk Edition actually lives up to its name, providing augmented sensing of temperature and range, a 16-bit color drawing program, Breakout game and the ability to display time in digital, analog or binary. Best of all, the creator asserts that various other sensors and programs can be added on a whim, which is something your $4,000 Sea-dweller most certainly cannot say for itself. Speaking of cost, we’re told that the whole shebang can be crafted for around $250, but considering that you’ll be a local hero should you actually duplicate the effort here, you owe it to yourself to give those source links a long, hard look.

HTC EVO 4G launch day line watch

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 4:18 am

You’ve had the day circled on your calendar for nearly a month, you’ve seen its insides, you’ve seen it rooted, and you’ve even witnessed Froyo running on its massive 4.3-inch screen. Now the time has finally come to actually own the EVO. As is our time-honored tradition with galactically significant product launches, we’re starting up a little photo essay here showing the progression of lines outside Sprint stores through this most auspicious of days. Only the trick here is that you’ll be doing our writing for us, a thousand words at a time. Join us after the break for the pictures and don’t forget — a lot of stores will be opening early to sate demand.

MSI X340 reborn as DIY carbon fiber tablet, watch it stream YouTube at 720p (video)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 9:17 am

Tired of touchscreen tablets that lack speed, a usable UI, or support for a certain streaming video format that will go unnamed? As one of our favorite sayings goes, if you want it done right, do it yourself. One Engadget reader took that idea to heart in crafting the 13.4-inch carbon fiber contraption you see above, imbuing it with enough high-end netbook parts to run Windows 7 at a brisk pace and play 720p video on its large, resistive touchscreen. Starting with the guts of an MSI X320, adding an accelerometer and 40GB solid state drive and finally sandwiching a random Chinese digitizer on top, the whole 1.6GHz Atom Z530 machine cost him under $700 in parts. For that price, we’re sure many of you would be happy to follow in his footsteps, but if not, by all means continue complaining to your tablet manufacturer of choice. We have another favorite saying: the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Video after the break; Q&A with the creator at our more coverage link.

GPS 800G watch phone gets the job done (and little else)

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:18 am

Watch phones clearly haven’t hit the mainstream yet, though a resurgence of Dick Tracy may very well turn that around. Given that we’re probably years, if not centuries, away from that happening, it’s up to niche import shops like Alibaba to bring us goods like these. The GPS 800G — delivered by none other than Shanghai Zhiyuan Vacuum Electric Company, of course — manages to handle time telling, texting, GPS routing and even emergency calling. Oh, and normal calling as well. Looks as if you’ll need to ping the supplier in order to get a lock on pricing, but we can’t say with a straight face that it’ll be worth your while.
