Samsung Craft to be MetroPCS’ first LTE handset, Dallas-Ft. Worth added as a launch market

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 12:18 pm

When we think “craft,” we think of airplanes, boats, and perhaps the occasional needlepoint project — but all kidding aside, we’ve definitely heard worst names than “Craft” for a major phone launch, so we’ve got nothing to complain about here. Regional carrier MetroPCS has announced on its latest earnings call that its first LTE phone — the FCC-approved R900 from Samsung — will come to market as the Craft at a price in the same range as its current smartphone lineup which includes the Code for $250 and the BlackBerry Curve 8530 for $280. These guys are still on target to launch in Vegas this year, but it now looks like they’ll be adding Dallas-Ft. Worth into the mix as it moves to complete its 4G build-out early next year. It’s a seriously aggressive timeline for a carrier traditionally known for cheap voice and text, not blazing data — but hey, who are we to complain?

EVGA’s dual-CPU Classified SR-2 motherboard put to the test: worth the money if you know what you’re doing

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 10:17 am

You know things are changing when cooling units that could once stave off overheating on top-tier graphics cards are starting to show up on motherboards. EVGA’s Classified SR-2 is a supersized, dual-socket desktop building block that tries to do it all, and — unusually for dual-CPU logic boards — it’s targeted at enthusiasts rather than buttoned-down business types. Four PCI-Express x16 slots, room for a dozen memory sticks (up to 48GB of RAM), and two USB 3.0 ports add some spec sheet glamor, but you’ll likely be wanting to know how much performance you can wring out of two 3.33GHz Intel Xeon 5680 chips working in tandem. The short answer is a lot. The long answer is, of course, that you’ll need to apply those 24 threads of power to applications that can really utilize them, such as the predictable video processing and 3D rendering. That’s where the multithreaded, multicore, multiprocessor rig really shone in this review, and the EVGA board underpinning it also acquitted itself with distinction. Hit the source for the benchmark results and more photography of exposed circuitry.

$35 tablet from India looks to be worth every paisa (video)

$35 tablet from India looks to be worth every paisa (video)

We’ve seen some janky tablets over the years, and to be honest this latest one out of India hardly looks posh. But, for the price, it could be pretty amazing: $35. That’s what India’s Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal, is saying this device will cost at retail. It’s a sort of tablet and, while we don’t know full specs, is said to have 2GB of RAM, run Linux, be able to connect to the internet over WiFi, open PDFs, and even play YouTube videos, meaning you can watch Shahrukh Khan tribute videos wherever you want. Confusingly, two separate devices were shown and we’re not sure which is the final design (if, indeed, either is), but the Indian government plans to subsidize their sale to students such that they’ll cost only $20. The goal is to have them selling for as little as $10 in the future. Exciting? Yes, but let’s just say we’ve had our hearts broken by supposed $10 Indian laptops before. Video of the thing in action after the break.

Sony thinks E Color is the new black, gives you a whole site’s worth to choose from

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:17 am

If your gear isn’t pushing the performance envelope, you typically have to resort to alternative means for attracting those precious customers. Sony’s newish VAIO E series is an exponent of just such a philosophy, with its lurid colorings and replaceable keyboard skins. The company’s decided to take things up a notch, however, by now offering a Color Combo site where we can combine the gnarliest hue mismatches this side of Colorware. The chromatic choices include the laptop’s case and keyboard as well as the additions of a wireless mouse and a reversible sleeve. Everything that isn’t bolted down to the computer will of course cost you extra, but will you really let a little bit of cash stand between you and that magenta dream machine?

US consumers purchase $55 million worth of 3D TVs and Blu-ray players, despite the glasses

Category: Industry Happeningsadmin @ 7:18 am

It’s early days yet, but NPD claims that revenue from US sales of 3D TVs and standalone 3D-capable Blu-ray players has exceeded $55 million in the first three months of availability. Mind you, this steady growth comes despite the absence of some major players. While that number might sound big, it’s tiny in comparison to the total number of TVs sold each month in the US and, according to our friend Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis at NPD, sales are expected to remain small throughout 2010. Regarding those much maligned 3D glasses, only 10% of those surveyed by NPD cited “looking silly” as a main concern. Instead, the biggest concern was not having enough glasses on hand for everyone looking at the set. A concern driven by cost, undoubtedly, and a dearth of survey participants from New York’s trendy Lower East Side.

Disclaimer: NPD’s Ross Rubin is a contributor to Engadget.

Nokia N82 Mobile Phone Review – Worth Your Keep?

Category: Memory Cardsadmin @ 8:53 am

The Nokia N82 mobile phone is one of the best multimedia smart-phones in the market today – and the most affordable of the N series. Although the Nokia N82 itself is bulky with the measurements of 112 x 50. 2 x 17. 3 mm and weighs of 114g – it is smaller than the N95 8GB and if you can take the thick frames and tiny sized keys aside – it is quite a stylish looking phone. Here’s a brief description of the Nokia N82 mobile phone -
Good sized screen at 2. 4″ offering a 240 x 320 pixel resolution Matte-finished stainless steel on the front and sides Beige plastic back with a subtle herringbone patterning A relatively big camera module Micro SD card slot on the side of the phone At the top of the Nokia N82 headset, there is 3. 5mm headphone portWith the good sized screen, this Nokia N82 model has a great automatic screen rotation which can switch to landscape view smoothly – which makes Nokia N82 5 mega-pixel camera and Xenon flash superb . . . and coupled with Carl Zeiss optics and auto-focus, the N82’s camera is one of the best in its class. As well, with access to the N Series features like N Cage games, Nokia music player, Nokia Maps and so on – there’s plenty to like about this phone. The drawbacks to this Nokia N82 mobile phone are the battery life and phone design. It is concerning that it is only slightly better than the power hungry N95 models. With moderate use, the battery life stands at only 1 to 1. 5 days worth. And if you are into the GPS mapping and Wi-Fi use, you could be charging your battery daily. Overall, the Nokia N82 mobile phone is value for money as it one of the best in the N series. But, if you’re not into more usable buttons and slimmer streamlined phones that will not make a bulge in your pockets – than this is not for you. The Nokia N82 will suit users who wants the full featured handset of the N series features and performance over the design.
